Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Hazy dark ruby color; very thin head. The aroma shows some apples, less powerful than expected, with light hop flowers. Strong body, full malty, a lot of caramel flavor, very well combined with a strong hopping (85 IBU), of good quality. Hoppier than an English Barley Wine, maltier than an American Ale, it misses some stronger aromatic character, but it’s still very enjoyable.

Pours clear bronze with a patchy small tan head. The aroma has rich caramelly malt, some nectar fruits and muted old hops. Medium / thick lush body with minor soft carbonation. The flavor starts with thick musty caramel, alcohol heat, toffee and dark fruits. The finish has light spice and more heat. Good barleywine.

Bottled: Pours deep amber red with a small head. Malty aroma that has notes of fudge and marshmallows. Flavour is sweet and malty with notes of fudge and liquorice. Finish is hop and alcohol bitter.

Post-Mondial Tasting. Citrus hops, malty nose, deep copper, small toffee head. Strong taste of malts, orangey hops infusion. Full bodied, very well balanced, bitter, too easily drinking for 10%. Terrific!

Reddish amber color out of the bottle with a whispy off white head. Dark sugar, juicy dark fruit and alcohol in the nose. Flavors of pit fruit, candi sugar, caramel, toffee, and orange zest in the finish. I really felt the ABV more than tasted it.

Fine sipping barleywine. Pours nicely but not in any distinguished way. Has a bright hop aspect with a substantial sweetness and average all around profile for a barleywine. Doesn’t slap you in the face with either alcohol or bitterness. Warms nicely and warms me nicely. A great beer to drink with a great friend.

Bottle. Thanks to Nuffield for this one. A nice rich dark brown amber color with a tan head. Nice and richly hopped with sweet fruity malts and a bitter finish. A solid barley wine.

This is a barley that I enjoyed. Dark reddish brown - thin head. Sweet malty aroma with caramel and booze. Palate is very sweet, syrupy thick. And I like that they balance it more than some with the hops.
