Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Hazy dark ruby color; very thin head. The aroma shows some apples, less powerful than expected, with light hop flowers. Strong body, full malty, a lot of caramel flavor, very well combined with a strong hopping (85 IBU), of good quality. Hoppier than an English Barley Wine, maltier than an American Ale, it misses some stronger aromatic character, but it’s still very enjoyable.

Pours clear bronze with a patchy small tan head. The aroma has rich caramelly malt, some nectar fruits and muted old hops. Medium / thick lush body with minor soft carbonation. The flavor starts with thick musty caramel, alcohol heat, toffee and dark fruits. The finish has light spice and more heat. Good barleywine.

This is a barley that I enjoyed. Dark reddish brown - thin head. Sweet malty aroma with caramel and booze. Palate is very sweet, syrupy thick. And I like that they balance it more than some with the hops.

Dark purple pour, small white head. Aroma is dark berries. Flavor is caramel, berries, chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt. Caramel lingers in the aftertatse bigtime. Lots of fresh leafy hops but low on bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel with some smoke in the finish as well.

The light shining through my Duvel glass reveals a wonderfully rich ruby color, clear as the cloudless morning. What a great way to start a Saturday. Backburner tastes rich and malty, without the standard issue young barleywine harsh hoppiness. Very smooth for a fresh BW. The aroma is slightly roasted with an underlying character of dark fruits. Should be interesting to sample as it ages.

Clear garnet with a slight head. Big malty pit fruit nose with plums, apples. Medium body. Flavors are pit fruit sweet malts with a bitter hop/alcohol twang to finish. Nice easy drinking beer here.

Pours to a viscous mahogany brown body with a creamy tall beige head and awesome lacing. The aroma is hoppy with citrus and has a dusty graininess to it. The hops vanish in the aroma soon after the pour. The flavor is grainy alcoholic malts with a nice creamy toffee and nougat. More old-ale-ish than a barleywine. The palate is medium bodied and creamy. Light bitterness. Flavor has pine resin to it.

Courtesy boboski. Dark amber/ruby. Small dense, tan head. Aroma is floral, vegetal, caramel/toffee, berries, resinous hops. Similar flavor- less vegetal, more resinous, piney hops, sweet caramel/toffee malt, florals, a bit of dark dried fruit showing up as it warms, subtle alcohol in the finish. Full body, balanced carbonation, lightly syrupy. Very good, drinkable.
