Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

Bottle. Pours a dark red brownish color with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, currents, alcohol, hops and caramel. Taste is almost identical. Flavor is sweet malt and hops that are nicely balanced. Has a long lingering caramel, light smokey finish.

22 oz bomber thanks to a trade with drewbeerme. Pours a clear dark ruby with a thick beige head. Nose is malty and fruity. Lots of red ripe fruit grapes, citrus, a little brown sugar. Sweet flavors to go with the nose all of that red ripe fruit bursting with a hint of licorice but no bitterness to balance out that sweetness. Pretty tasty none the less.

Rich, dark amber in color. Tan foamy head. Amazingly malty sweetness, slighy roasty, definetly malty. Its not over carbonated.

NIce dark caramel brown with a lovely fluffy head. This beer looks extremely good. I am very impressed. Picked this one up at Five Points Bottle Shop in Athens, Georgia. Aromatic alcohol malt aroma, with a nice sweet malt aroma. Very sweet taste as well. Not very hoppy at the beginning but then it develops into a hoppy taste, but not a very hoppy taste. This isn’t a "mean" barley wine. It doesn’t have that hoppy taste I was hoping for. Overall, the malts are awesome, and the aroma is awesome as well, but the hops are lacking. Pretty good brew.

Bottle shared with Ian. Pours a reddish brown with a thick tan head. Big beautiful aroma of citrusy hops and malty caramel. Taste is thick and hoppy, very big malt profile, but not over the top. I don’t know how aged the bottle was, but there was a subtlety of the hops and malt that was very nice.
