| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2009 From a bottle poured a hazy dark amber color with a fair amount of head. Nice strong sweet malty flavor with a slight alcohol finish. CamdenD (613), Madrid, Spain
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 22, 2009 This is a solid, solid barleywine. Unassuming warm, typical, nose, as well as an "I’m here, but that’s about it" appearance, but then things get interesting. Big, nicely smoothed taste and extremely crisp palate make this a drinker at 10%. Not sweetened or otherwise altered like some Southern Tier beers. In short, yet another extremely well-done "extreme" beer from ST. nickd717 (1386), Palo Alto, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Bottle via trade thanks to ben4321. Pours a reddish amber color with a medium off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is surprisingly hoppy, along with wood, caramel malt, and toffee. Flavor is mildly sweet and very good with caramel malt, toffee, wood, butterscotch, and some hops on the finish. Smooth on the palate with some mild bitterness. Drinkability is high for the style and ABV. andersand (384), Malmö, Sweden
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Brown with a small greyish head. Aroma is sweet almost sugary and malty with bright citrus notes. Flavour is intensely citric and caramelly, very simple and straight forward but drinkable without getting too cloying (if served as cold as recommended.) Dont let this one warm up, there is no complexity to be showcased, its just a simple strong barleywine with fun citrus notes. redtechnj (9), New Jersey, USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Aroma is fruity with hints of yeast and hops. It’s clear, copper color is off set by it’s creamy beige head. It has a medium sweet taste that leads to a lightly bitter aftertaste. It’s a full body beer with a creamy texture, light carbonation and a bitter finish. I don’t have alot of experience with barley wine style beers but I would drink this one again. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 14, 2009 It pours dark brown with a off-white head and and has a strong aroma of dark malts and fruits with a good presence of alcohol. The taste is far less strong than the smell and has a solid base of dark malts, fruit, with a warm alcohol flavor at the end. WLG423 (80), Connecticut, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 8, 2009 Red amber body. Aroma is toasty and slightly sticky with some subtle floral notes hidden behind the malty toast. Mouth feel is thick and slightly syrup-like with a slight carbonated feeling. Slightly sweet cereal-like initial flavor that is followed by some grassy hop flavor. Finish tapers off quickly but lasts for a little while, preserving some of the more bitter notes. yesyouam (602), Fairport, New York, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2009 Southern Tier Back Burner is a clear, dense, ruby ale with a thick, lumpy, yellow-beige head that has outstanding retention and lacing. It has a strong, sweet aroma that’s grainy, tart and grassy. It’s full bodied and very smooth with a dry, delicate finsh. It’s very sweet. The grassy hops are present. It’s not super bitter, but it’s pretty American tasting. There is a long aftertaste of whiskey and juniper and perhaps peat. 22 oz. is a lot of this. It looks like this is the "FIRST BREWED OF TWO THOUSAND & EIGHT".
