Commercial Description:
“first brew of the year” Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun. 10% abv. • 15ºL

22 ounce bottle, damn this beer smells good. It immediately grabs your senses with a rich aroma of hops. The color is a beautiful reddish once held up to some light. The taste is more malty than hoppy, but the hops are definitely present. It’s has a sweet malt taste but there is some alcohol as well. This is a solid barley wine. Southern Tier once again does not disappoint. Would buy again

Courtesy of ibrew2or3. Pours copperish, off white head. Aroma, grainy, fruity ( banana / vanilla) Taste, hoppy, caramel, barley, light chocolat, malty. Drinkable, but not memorable. Still a veryd ecent barley wine.

Bottle courtesy of Ibrew2or3. Pours a clear amber with a one finger light tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of caramel, spicy hops, and sweet malt. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Not the best from Southern Tier but still a solid brew.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a chestnut color with a small tan head. The aroma was a complex mix of sweet malts, pineapple, pear, apple, caramel and bourbon. A bit heavy on the alcohol though on the nose. The flavor was sour, lightly bitter and had notes of fruity hops, caramel and nut. The finish was short, sour and malty. Good but not great.

22oz bottle. Pours a completely hazed ruby brown with a small beige ring. Nose was mostly toasted and caramel malts with some pine and booze. Flavor was again very sweet and malty with a light hop bite. Finish was sweet and a lot less bitter than expected.....a great Barley Wine.

22 oz. bottle. 2008 vintage. Pours a dark leather color. Thin, off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, brown sugar, piney hops, and warming alcohol. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is quite a treat. Very nice balance between the caramel malts and hops. This beer seems to mellowing a bit and it’s quite nice. Alcohol isn’t too over the top in the finish, which is great for my strike zone. Slightly bitter finish that lingers for a some time.
