Aroma - Caramel malt, slight hop aroma, and tea.
Appearance - Copper-red in color with a decent off-white head that diminishes rather quickly. Thin lacing on inside of mug.
Flavor - Big taste! I’m a fan of Irish red ales, but this one is like Smithwick’s on steroids. Lots of malt, hops, and...alcohol.
Palate - Medium. A bit slick with a loooong finish. From the ingredient list on the bottle I thought it finish a bit cleaner.
Overall - This is obviously very well made, but for my taste, the ABV is too high for the style. Traditional Irish reds are my ’go to’ session beers. This would make a nice occasional treat.

Aroma of rich, smooth caramel malt, and dark fruit. Complemented by a full-bodied mouthfeel, Big Red features a sweet mixture of caramel, milk chocolate, and ripe raisins. Finishes with a touch of hoppy bitterness, not showing much alcohol at all. This can lead to quite a surprise, given the 9.5%ABV! Overall, this is a tasty beer, but nonetheless not special, complex, or hoppy enough to win over beer enthusiasts who don’t usually like sweet reds or similar styled ASAs. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 26, 2008 22oz bottle from Swolf3. Amber pour with a medium thick white head. Decent malty aroma, nothing stands out. Nice hop bite to it with a good malty backbone, tasty. noncaloric (628), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 21, 2008 Bottle thanks to lukin013. Hazy amber-orange, abundant beige head with good retention and a lot of lace. Nose is aromatic hops with a strong dose of caramel and alcohol. Taste is similar, caramel malts, with a dose of nutty chocolate, overtly alcoholic, with plenty of piney hops. The hop-fest in this glass is just sublime in flavor and texture, but there’s a medicinal bitter quality to it’s booziness that’s detracting. Trev (888), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 17, 2008 poured an amber colour witha medium head
Aroma is woody herbal hop and caramel malt with a medium alc presence.
Flavour was again herby pine hop, toasty malt tones and a noticable alc throughout that doesn’t totally jive with the herbal hopiness. makes it a tad medicinal at times.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 30, 2008 Pours a clear amber color with a thin white head. Pleasant aroma of hops, caramel and malt. Good flavor of caramel, malt and hops. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. Quite good. jmm635 (269), Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2008 Pours a nice amber color with a very rocky white head. Nice lacing. Has a nice hoppy aroma with a little spice. Flavor is balanced between malts, hops, slightly spicy, but there’s a weird taste I can’t really place. Not a terrible beer, but nothing real special. douglas88 (1676), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 25, 2008 Bomber thanks to wasatch. Pours a light golden color with a medium white head. The aroma is very powerful; caramel malts in your face, very aggressive. The flavor was just tons of caramel malts, very sweet and strong. Some light hops attempt to balance it out. Very tasty. Strong and fairly warm, but so good you don’t notice.
