Commercial Description:
Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Bottle. Tulip glass. Clear ruby color little head. The write up on the bottle advertises Hallertau hops but the aroma is dominated by malt. Sweet caramel malt aroma and taste with grapefruit hops. Spicy with a bitter finish. A good beer but I’m not particularly fond.

This was a malty baby, though the hops were there. Definitely some smoke, though little fire. Surprisingly high in ABV. An easy drink and a beautiful dark red bottle.

Thanks for sharing Jason. Clear orange, thin white head. Nose was very nice with full on caramel coated grains and cereal, with soft underlying notes of milk chocolate. Flavor is spicy hopped and bitter, but gains nice balance with grainy caramel and chocoalte-like tones to round this out. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Didn’t expect much, but was pleasantly suprised as this was very well made...

Brilliant copper in colour, large white coloured head, excellent retention, great lacing. The aroma is very hoppy, lots of pine, fruity, some orange citrus, lots of caramel sweetness. The flavour has lots of caramel sweetness, the hops seem to be more muted in the flavour then in the aroma, still quite hoppy though, lots of pine, highly sweet. Big and chewy mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. Finishes long, hoppy and very sweet. I’m not sure balance was in mind when they made this one. Full out hops from start to finish.

650ml bottle from the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/new-york target=blank>Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York for $5.99.

Nose of big, sticky and coarse maraschino cherry and wood malts, but also hoppy and rich and a little overly sweet. Good qualities include some fruit and resinous hops, much like fruit cocktail, and as always Southern Tier executes their recipes flawlessly, but really this just falls into that imperial red/strong ale category that I just don’t really get much out of.
