Commercial Description:
Cherry saison is concurrent with the best of summer weather. The days are long and warm, and the spring blossoms have gracefully turned to plump drupes. Much in the same way, our Imperial Cherry Saison undergoes subtle but noticable changes while cruising from kettle to bright tank. Like the sun ripening fruit, a pit stop makes this beer better. Cherry Saison is aged with French Oak staves, imparting overtones of spice and balancing the natural sweetness of the cherries. Cherry Saison is the first in this series to incorporate oak aging. Enjoy it as a dessert beer, or tilt it back while sitting under a shady tree on a warm summer afternoon.

Bomber purchased at Simone’s for $6.99. Nice find for a quick in-and-out liquor run. Pour is a nice clean and clear dark golden, just a slight tint of darkness to it. There was a decent sized head on top, but that went away quick enough. The aroma is a little funky, almost off. It has lots of good wild malt smells mingling with some cherry fruitiness, it’s just that...well there’s.... OK, it smells almost like food. I’m not talking about a cherry tart either, this kinda smells like meat and grilled corn somehow. Strange. The flavor kind of falls through as well. It doesn’t carry much with it that makes me think summer, saison, topless women, cherries, or wood. AND NO BEER SHOULD MAKE ME NOT THINK ABOUT TOPLESS WOMEN! (Where’s Matta to chime in one this one.) This one goes up there with Cuvee numbero uno as the only dissapointing big brews from the boys at Southern Tier.

Pours golden with a white head. Aroma has earthy undertones but the aroma of cherry is undetectable. Flavor has a slight oakishness accompanied by spice and slight bitterness. However there is no cherry flavor to be had. Finish is smooth. Pleasent but would have liked to see the cherry more pronunced in a balanced way.

Golden color. Smells earthy with hints of wheat, sweeter hops, and oak. Has a sweeter flavor. Aftertaste is smooth and enjoyable.

22oz. Pour is a lighter amber with a fluffy white head. Aromas of sweet fruits, cherry, and slight yeast. Flavor is bland with some cherries and light spice. Eh just alright.

From a bottle poured amber with a good amount of head. Not much cherry flavor or aroma, but a smooth sweet malty flavor and finish instead.

My Bottom Line:
Lactic ideas, doughy yeast, plump cereals and bitter hops construct a head scratcher of a flavor profile in this comfortably plump yet never evocative Saison.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam decorates the cloudy blond.
-The cherries are really discreet and even then seem to clash with the yeast character. I smelled them as red peppers first...
-Carbonation is very smooth, making this more drinkable than it should be at 8%.
-Sweetness is overdone for the style.
-In the end, it was simply a recipe that did not feel compelling at all to me.

Bottle.

(Rating #2391)
