Commercial Description:
Cherry saison is concurrent with the best of summer weather. The days are long and warm, and the spring blossoms have gracefully turned to plump drupes. Much in the same way, our Imperial Cherry Saison undergoes subtle but noticable changes while cruising from kettle to bright tank. Like the sun ripening fruit, a pit stop makes this beer better. Cherry Saison is aged with French Oak staves, imparting overtones of spice and balancing the natural sweetness of the cherries. Cherry Saison is the first in this series to incorporate oak aging. Enjoy it as a dessert beer, or tilt it back while sitting under a shady tree on a warm summer afternoon.

From a bottle poured amber with a good amount of head. Not much cherry flavor or aroma, but a smooth sweet malty flavor and finish instead.

My Bottom Line:
Lactic ideas, doughy yeast, plump cereals and bitter hops construct a head scratcher of a flavor profile in this comfortably plump yet never evocative Saison.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam decorates the cloudy blond.
-The cherries are really discreet and even then seem to clash with the yeast character. I smelled them as red peppers first...
-Carbonation is very smooth, making this more drinkable than it should be at 8%.
-Sweetness is overdone for the style.
-In the end, it was simply a recipe that did not feel compelling at all to me.

Bottle.

(Rating #2391)

Bottle... Poured a cloudy, golden-burnt orange with a white head. I remember the cherries not being too dominant in this one, which is a good thing, but the rest of the brew/batch was moderate. Lots of malted grain flavors and a mild bitterness towards the finish. Earthy and fruity, but nothing really distinguishable in the fruit flavors.

I tried this beer on April 23, 2009 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a clear golden-red colour with a thin white head, and some sediment floating around. The aroma was earthy, with some malt, and sour cherry to go along as well. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with medium to high carbonation going on. The taste was earth, mud, some malt, and a little sour cherry. Good, but not great.

Pours hazy amber with a 1 finger fizzy white head that has good retention and leaves a little lacing. Aroma is spicy yeast, dusty grain, grass, limestone, tart lemon and a little tart cherry. Flavor is pretty sweet and ethanol heavy all the way through, herbal notes, hints of dry oak, banana, lemon, peppery yeast, tack bread and mellow tart cherry. Finish is dry and fruity with a pretty heavy alcohol tone. Palate is medium thickness, rather syrupy and slick, carbonation level is a little low for my liking. Not too bad overall but the palate sort of sucks and the alcohol came through too much.

Pours a lightly cloudy golden amber with a smallish white head and some lacing. Aroma is medium sweet with bubblegum, clove and sour cherry. Flavor is clove, cherry, light banana, woodiness and light spice. Medium body, tart and dry finish. Very minimal alcohol burn.

Bottle (22oz). Hazy gold pour, sort of flat-looking, large frothy off-white head with sticky lace remnants. Smells of white wine, light cherry and floral bitterness. Quite a nice saison flavour here - funky spice, dry herbal/floral bitterness, light sweet malt - frankly virtually no cherry here at all, and I don’t get any oakiness either - but it’s a decent saison. Decent body, carbonation and yeasty acidity, with a quick malt finish but a dry, slightly boozy tart finish. I’m quite surprised, I wasn’t expecting much.
