Commercial Description:
Cherry saison is concurrent with the best of summer weather. The days are long and warm, and the spring blossoms have gracefully turned to plump drupes. Much in the same way, our Imperial Cherry Saison undergoes subtle but noticable changes while cruising from kettle to bright tank. Like the sun ripening fruit, a pit stop makes this beer better. Cherry Saison is aged with French Oak staves, imparting overtones of spice and balancing the natural sweetness of the cherries. Cherry Saison is the first in this series to incorporate oak aging. Enjoy it as a dessert beer, or tilt it back while sitting under a shady tree on a warm summer afternoon.

Bomber courtesy of JCB – thanks Jason! Pours a cloudy gold with minimal head. Nose is yeast and spice. Taste is spicy yeast and a weird medicine-like cherry flavor. Medium mouth feel. Meh, not so good.

Bottle: Pour was medium golden with a fizzy head. Aroma of spice and light cherries. Flavor was lacking a ton on cherries but did have the light malt and spice of a saison. Not bad but not real good. Needs more cherries.

Tasting at Backus’ Backyard Bash. incredibly clear and light. tart cherry flavor is not overpowering. moderately artificial, very sweet for a saison, a little pepper notes.

Little to no cherry. Basic saison taste, some fruity and tangy. Overall light beer, almost lawnmower-ish. Not extraordinary. But thanks to Sanford for passing this on.

Tasting at Backus’ Backyard Bash. Pours a light gold with a hint of red. Malty, fruity cherry aroma. Dry slightly bitter cherry taste with hints of pepper. Finishes a little spicy and bitter. I was underwhelmed.

Bomber. 10/25/08. Poured golden yellow. Thick creamy, foamy white head. Aroma of Cherries hit right away. Flavor of coriander, vanilla, malts, oak, slight cherry in the end. Medium body. Carbonation was present. Dry finish. Alcohol comes through near the end.

Aromas of moderate strength, mostly yeasty funk with some grassy hops and just a bit of cherry. Pours medium amber, slightly hazy, with a sizable head of small white bubbles, dissipating to leave some nice lace. First sip leaves a good first impression, sweet malts and sugar, yeasty must and funk, turning a little tart, and finally finishing with cherry sweetness. This doesn’t last. By the third sip the cherry is no longer detectable, and it’s a sweet yeasty ale with a sizable portion of piney hops at the front and some oak on the back. The funk gets funkier as the glass goes on, but not entirely in a pleasant way. The finish gets overtly rubbery or vinyl-like after a while. Thick bodied, a bit of alcohol warming, prickly carbonation.
