Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Pour is dark brown with a tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma is big chocolate, light booze, faint fruit, malt. About as good as it gets. Taste is relatively one dimensional, heavy chocolate. Malt and booze also make an appearance. Mouth is full and creamy. Finish is very smooth and a little warming. Overall a solid stout. Not something I could drink too often, but nice on occasion.

This one is way over the top with chocolate. Pours a thick jet black with a brown head that fades relatively quickly. The nost is straight hersheys chocolate. I am not sure it even tastes like beer. This would be great for someone who disliked chocolate stouts and you wanted to try and hook them on it , because it is pure chocolate. This is definately not my favorite, and I think the oatmeal is much better.

On tap. Beautiful dark chocolate colored body. Wonderful chocolate cake aroma and taste. Like drinking the best brownie you’ve ever had. I have nothing bad to say about this except I don’t have a case of it. Extremely decadent and rich. Amazing

Wow, wonderful chocolate aroma on this one! Its like chocolate cake dipped in chocolate. Very smooth drinking, the 11% ABV is hidden well. I may have to pick up a few more of these.

Black silky pour with no head at all. Woah very obvious chocolate aromas are apparent as well as vanilla and a distinct raspberry quality which is amazing. The depth of complexity on the nose is apparent. Similar experience on the palate, except with a more pronounced bittering dry dustyness which complements the smoothed out malty sweetness. Delicious but maybe too decadent for my tastes as one bottle is perhaps too much; but still this is an amazing beer and would work great for dessert.

On Tap-Judges Bench-Ellicott City Md-Dark brown w/a good size tan head. Strong chocolate aroma, Flavor of chocolate is most obvious, it’s a deep quality chocolate flavor which is brewed right into the beer, not some cheap cocoa mix poured in. Had a bit of a malt flavor as well. Rich mouthfeel w/a long, full, chocolate finish.

Tasted 11/29/08. 22oz bomber. Pitch black hue with a beige ring of head. Wow! What a nose. All chocolate. Dark chocolate, fudge and chocolate icing. Full bodied and delicious! Big malty characater and a ton of chocolate flavors. Ample, yet blended. Well masked alcohol presence. Not overtly sweet, but big chocolate notes. Mild hops that add a touch of pine in the finish. This is by far the best Chocolate stout I have ever had. Gimme more!

22oz bottle 9/18/08(Courtesy of Hopscotch during the CU/WVU throwdown). Pours a pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate and more chocolate. Taste is again chocolate and more chocolate. This full bodied brew is very well balanced. If you like chocolate then you will love this beer. Great brew.
