Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

On tap pours pitch black with very little head. Has a bittersweet chocolate aroma and sweetness like candy. Has a medium body. Flavor is sweet rich hersheys chocolate with some alcohol added. I don*t know how they do it, but this brewery makes crazy sweet beers that taste spot on to what they have brewed and this is no different. Nice job.

Pours a deep dark amber black. The smell is an overpowering aroma of dark chocolate. It pours a thick black, with about a finger of tan head. The taste has a touch of alcohol heat, and dark chocolate. Very drinkable though. A meal in a glass.

Aroma of dark chocolate, nuts, roasted malt and liquorice, completely black, held the glass up to a 60 watt bulb, no light passed, a firm medium sized cappuccino head, plenty of lace. Flavour has dark chocolate, roast malt, coffee, liquorice, brazil nuts, wood, alcohol is noted. Thick like melted chocolate, very well balanced, complex, oily, so bitter, alcohol has a fine burn, being a bomber and 11%, it should be slowly paced, but it is so fine I want to drink it quickly. Marvellous.

Beer poured a deep brown color with a light brown head. Aroma was enticing from 2 feet away, excellent dark chocolate smell right off the bat. When smelled up close, overtones of vanilla were apparent. First sip released an intense bitter chocolate flavor with a sweet, slightly nutty aftertaste. One of Southern Tiers better offerings that Ive had so far.

Pours a deep dark brown with a tan head. The nose is very overpowering in chocolate however the are subtle hints of caramel and roasted malts. Comes across the palate a little thick and rather bitter like dark chocolate. This beer is amazing. If you see it buy it! Cause this one wont last long, and it sure dont last long in front of you either.

WOW! Very near perfection. I didnt think I would rate another impy this high, but this beer is a class all its own. This is like alcoholic Hershey’s Syrup. Aroma was perfect. Strong dark chocolate. Pour was a beautiful deep dark brown/black with a one finger tan frothy head. Taste was all chocolate. Not much else here. Thick deep dark chocolate. Could use more carbonation but that’s OK. I gotta pick up some more bottles before its gone again

Bottle. Pours a rich dark brown with decent tan head. Smells very sweet. HUGE chocolate flavor - actually too huge. Nothing subtle about this beer. One glass limit on this one - I appreciate the effort but other ST beers are better.

I love imperial stout as much as the next man, but this was simply too much sweetness for me. Pours a muddy chocolate bar brown with no head. An aromatic and flavor assault of bitter-sweet chocolate. A hint of vanilla in the nose and some malt in the taste. No hop presense to speak of. Too much chocolate sweetness because it is absolutely overpowering and the 11% abv does nothing to nullify it. It sticks to your mouth like a thick stout should. I could only drink about 6 oz of the stuff.
