Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

22 oz. bottle - thanks hank!!pours thick and pitch black; chocolate head and very oily appearance; strong and sweet milk chocolate aromas leave room for nothing else; no bitterness and creamy texture; drinks silky smooth and flavors are almost all chocolate as well with minor maltiness; at times it tastes perfect, but other times the chocolate is almost too much; an impressive ans tasty brew though

Bottle courtesy of patrick767 at the Fort Wayne Winter Gathering.Small tan head, no lacing, opaque, no carbonation observed, and a dark brown hue with a red tint.Nose was malty, heavily chocolate, sweet, some caramel, and a hint of vanilla. Flavor was sweet, a lot of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and finishes dry.Smooth, dry mouthfeel and medium in body.Quaffable, pretty much one dimensional, and would make for a nice dessert beer.

With a beer, I like complexity. At the same time I am a total chocoholic. That’s why I am a bit torn on my review here. As far as complexity goes, this one is pretty uncomplex and one dimensional with its chocolate bomb. The aroma is like walking into grandma’s house just after she baked a chocolate cake. The flavor is decadent truffle like chocolate. Oh yeah, this one came from rollinhard. Would totally welcome this one back again anytime.

22oz Bottle thanks to kmeves. I pulled this Chocolate treat out about the same time I was loading up my kids Easter Basket full of chocolate. This one Pours out a dark brownish red. This baby pours out nice and thick. A nice aroma of chocolate and light hop aroma. Tast full of sweet chocolate. With a nice bitter end. Very nice and thick. One more thing 11% I couldn’t pick it up. WOW Southern Tier is moving up my list. I have not had a brew from them yet that was bad.

Bottle thanks to goldtwins: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a thin ring of light tan head. Aroma of rich sweet molten chocolate and some earthy roasted malt. Starts rich and chocolatey with a sweet Tootsie Roll flavor toward a slightly drier, full bittersweet finish. Slightly cloying right now, but should age well.

Pours opaque black with a three-quarter-inch head of beige. Traces of lacework are found on the glass only for a short while. Aromatics are massively chocolaty. Extremely fresh, high cocoa content chocolate. Solid chocolate drizzeled with chocolate syrup and dusted with cocoa powder. The nose finishes with a hint of espresso and dried brownie mix. The mouthfeel is thick, chewy, and tongue-wrapping. The pallet is laced with a huge amount of dark chocolate, cocoa nubs, fudge-coated coffee beans, and black forest batter. Alcohol is barely warming and barely cuts through the profile. Finishes with ligering dark chocolate syrup, a drying bitterness, and espresso gounds. Wowza. Did I mention chocolate? Absolutely by far the most intense chocolate experience to be found in a beer.

This bottled brew from a rating party poured a small sized head of foamy fine to large sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a dark brown colored body and a poor lacing. The strong aroma was all chocolate/cocoa. The thick mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish with a strong chocolate/cocoa aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of malt and chocolate/cocoa. A decent one but not one that I would consider drinking again too sweet and wya too much chocolate for my palate although it smells wonderful.

An awesome beer that I was lucky to try. Great aroma, chocolate and malts. Taste is hugely chocolatly though a nice roasted malt taste shows through. Ending was of a dark chocolate, ie: slightly bitter with a slight sweetness accented by some malts. I’m a great fan of this beer.
