Commercial Description:
“a stout of great contention” We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew. 10.0% abv • 25º plato • 195º L • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row pale malt / dark caramel malt / vanilla bean / lactose sugar / kettle hops: columbus / aroma hops: horizon

22 oz bomber. Pours dark brown with a thin, but lasting tan head. Aroma is sickly sweet, dominated by cloying butterscotch and vanilla and lactose. Flavor is better balanced between sweet butterscotch, roasty dark malts and boozy bitterness. Medium bodied and syrupy and smooth, with good warming as characteristic of ST’s impy stout series. Overall, not bad, but I am put off by the overly sweet and cloying flavoring used. But, I guess that is what this particular iteration is about, so at least we were warned.

dark black with tan head, mild carbonation. sweet caramel nose. flavor mostly of caramel, to the point that i imagine it is more than just crystal malt, some vanilla and a little bit of roasted. the overall sweetness of the beer is distracting and i was disappointed in general

Jet black color with no head. Assertive aroma of creme brulee. Tastes like creme brulee with a bitter end. Very enjoyable upfront, but becomes too sweet as as you work your way through the beer.

bomber thanks to KAggie. shared at December Houston Tasting. Pours dark brown with no head. Nose is a potent smell of butterscotch. Taste is butterscotch. Mouthfeel is sticky and way too sweet. Very one dimensional. I guess if you wanna drink alcoholic butterscotch syrup then this is for you. Not for me. Could only handle a few sips of this and gave it away.

Pours a dark brown with a big thick brown head. Smells and tastes exactly like creme brulee, but with a stout bitterness around the edges. If you like creme brulee and beer, you will love this beer.

Bottle thanks to kaggie97 at the Houston Impy stout tasting. The love it or hate beer. Poured black with no head. Nose of milk and butterscotch, eeww. Tastes of vanilla, a bit of chocolate, butterscotch. Sweet and sticky and cloying. Kevin actually got the remainders of 2 of the beers at the tasting and sucked them all down. Well, I did not love it but a small apertif beer limited to 4 to 6 ounces I could bear it.

Bottle from BlackForestCO. I love you, J. Pours a deep, thick black with a beige head. Aroma is butterscotch, vanilla extract, and candied sugar. Flavor is butterscotch, candied sugar, and butterscotch, with a butterscotch finish. Beer leaves a lingering sweetness on the tongue. Great liquid dessert; I love it.
