Commercial Description:
“a stout of great contention” We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew. 10.0% abv • 25º plato • 195º L • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row pale malt / dark caramel malt / vanilla bean / lactose sugar / kettle hops: columbus / aroma hops: horizon

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a minimal fizzy light brown head that faded very quickly. The nose is just big dominating vanilla beans, there is some roast and chocolate there, but it really is hard to get past all the vanilla. More and more lactose comes out as it warms. The flavor is surprisingly good for what I was expecting from the nose. There is a wonderful balance between the chocolate, roast, and vanilla. The slight alcohol kick on the back end does recall drinking vanilla extract straight from the bottle though. Full bodied and quite oily in texture with nice soft carbonation. This is pretty good, but like their Choklat, it gets a little tiring on the palate as you make your way through the whole bottle.

Bottle from a couple people. Huge sweet aroma of vanilla, butterscotch, general sticky sweetness, and some underlying roast and earth. Pours dark brown with a tan head that resides quickly. Flavors of vanilla and butterscotch initially followed by chocolate, dark roasted malts, and a nice earthy hop profile that rounds it out. Lots of lingering sweet butterscotch and vanilla. Nice what they have done here, the sweetness covers up a lot of the alcohol. This took me over an hour to finish due to the richness of the brew, but it wasnt bad. Interesting.

This things pours nice dark color. Almost resembles a wine, but I may be making that association by the flavor. You can smell this thing long before you bring it towards your nose. So sweet. The flavor is like liquefied butterscotch. It initially tastes pretty good, but then it just goes to crap after the first sips because it is just too much. This is definitely where too much of a good thing is bad. With that said, it is still really good for about five minutes.

Like drinking a tub of butterscotch with caramel sauce. Sickeningly sweet. Intolerable. Drain pour. We tried giving it away at the bar, and no one would take it.

A deep dark stotu with a thin moka head. A sweet amaretto aroma, almonds, vanilla, and sultry caramel. Aptly named. In mouth, kicks ass, with warming alcohol, vanilla and caramel ice cream, coconut, some woody notes. Rich and Intense. On tap at Empire brewpub, August 15 2008.

I am one of the people who did not get this beer. To me it was horribly sweet and overpowered with vanilla flavor. It was a drain pour.

Draught. Dark brown with ruby edges, creamy beige head. I can smell the aroma from across the table--cream, coffee, mocha, vanilla, hazlenut, butterscotch, toffee--it smells great. Flavor is similar, hazelnuts, butterscotch, dried out by the vanilla and roasted malts in the finish. Delicious chocolate aftertaste.
