Commercial Description:
“a stout of great contention” We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew. 10.0% abv • 25º plato • 195º L • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row pale malt / dark caramel malt / vanilla bean / lactose sugar / kettle hops: columbus / aroma hops: horizon

Bomber. Opaque rich dark brown pour supporting a tall creamy dark tan head. Unmistakable aroma of butterscotch. Exactly the same for the flavor. Butterscotch overwhelms everything else. Some milk chocolate and roasted malt try to punch through towards the back of the tongue but they’re rarely successful. Creamy texture and long sweet finish.

Sampled at the Sep. Carolina Crew gathering. Butterscotch, vanilla, caramel aroma. Smells great. Doesn’t taste quite as good as ot smells though. Way, way too sweet.

Bomber: This poured dark brown out of the bottle and turned black in the glass, capped by a creamy tan head that left spotty lacing. I keep wondering if I really like the aroma, a caramel and vanilla custard with a splash of old coffee. This has one of the creamiest mouthfeels that I’ve experienced in a beer in some time. The flavor adds some roasted malt and a hint of chocolate to all that was carried over from the nose. The finish is dry and has a burnt coffee/charred nut bitterness. Interesting Imp, hiding its sturdy alcohol content throughout the drinking.

Pours a burnt brown with a tan head. Devastatingly sweet aroma of creme brulee (shocker!), and a sort of burnt caramel dulce de leche. The flavor was much less sweet. Surprisingly dry finish and full mouthfeel.

Bottle: Poured a deep pitch-black color stout with a medium light brown foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is totally dominated by vanilla and some weird crème brulé-like syrup. Taste is also dominated by the vanilla and whatever syrup they’ve used and little else is discernable. Full body but could have been creamier with good carbonation and no discernable alcohol. Interesting experiment but a bit over the top and not sure I would want to drink a full bottle by myself.

Draught @ Cole’s in Buffalo. Pitch black, opaque with thick but receding tan head. Aroma is smelled across the room, or must be. Potent and a lot like coffee creamer. Mouthfeel is creamy. Flavors are wholly disjointed and never come together. The roastiness and hop in the finish are incongrous with the sweet entry, alcohol is plainly detectable almost like someone threw a shot of Kahlua in here. Couldn’t finish the pint but it was worth trying.

Bottle. Wow is this beer hit or miss with people. Glad i didnt really try and pick it apart, at 10% this is an after dinner dessert in a glass. Lots of vanilla Cream coffee custard and of course milky sugar. Good beer.

Big artificial nut and vanilla aroma. Very dark. Tastes like a vanilla hazelnut syrup mixed with cheap, stale coffee. Truly awful and utterly undrinkable.
