Commercial Description:
“a stout of great contention” We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew. 10.0% abv • 25º plato • 195º L • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row pale malt / dark caramel malt / vanilla bean / lactose sugar / kettle hops: columbus / aroma hops: horizon

Pours a dark black with some light the head is one finger frothy and tan. The nose is sweet, has some butterscotch, sugary, vanilla, some alcohol, smells cloyingly sweet, like a dessert, bittersweet chocolate. The flavor is sweet, cloying, warm alcohol, thick butterscotch, vanilla, light waxy hop feel. The palate is thick and velvety with a warm light bitterness.

Bottle. Excellent take on a brilliant and sophisticated-yet simple-dessert. Flavour is of creme anglaise (in layman terms...melted vanilla ice cream), caramel, and butterscotch. Although not a beer to be consumed daily, it is a wonderful dessert beer (and about 1/10th the number of calories of crème brûlée) and a splendid take on the normal Imperial Stout. The alcohol is masterfully masked...and would make a superb base for a beer float!

Sampled at the NY Brewfest on 9/12. Not able to give a very accurate rating due to the sheer number of brews sampled. This was the overall crowd pleasure of the night. So much large creame and burnt marshmellow flavor.. also rich toffee notes in this monster of a beer @ 10%. It had brew enthusiasts and n00bz together in awe. Could be one of the best dessert beers, ever.

It reminds me of a butterscotch liqueur which is very heavy and creamy yet hard to digest without mixing it with something else (hint hint). A dessert beer which isn’t very beer-like despite its malt quotient and sweet qualities.

Bottle. Pours black with a small, fizzy, light brown head, mostly diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, chocolate), light hops (herbs), average yeast (leather) with notes of toffee and vanilla. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Holy crap was this tasty! This is a massive monster of a beer. Very desert like, with tons of chocolate, cream, vanilla and sugar. It really is desert in a glass. As much as I liked this, it’s something I can take in very limited doses. It’s over the top for sure, but it’s a nice diversion from the regular old Imperial Stout that everyone seems to brew these days.
