apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA Jan 18, 2008 Slightly hazy, copper-hued beer. A thin white frothy head around the sides of the snifter. Very citrusy aroma. Lots of bitter hops, as expected, and quite powerful. The alcohol is high, but its pretty well-hidden. It could really sneak up on you. Heavy on the spices and orange in the flavor.
polomagnifico (416), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Aug 27, 2008 Bottle. Aroma has notes of citrus, honey, caramel, grass, and flowers. Wonderful aroma. Hazy medium orange amber hue with an average sized off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lace. Flavor is caramel sweet and fruity then ends with a solid bitterness. Palate is full bodied and oily soft. Alcohol is well masked and body is nice and smooth. A very good DIPA with a fantastic nose, flavor and palate. Very good chilledStellar. Ibrew2or3 (1685), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Aug 25, 2008 Courtesy of GMCC2181. Bomber pours copper with gold edges and white head of foam. The aroma is grapefruit hops, pine hops, some grassiness, a bit of roasted malts and a backbone of mild sweet malts. The aroma seems a bit on the light side, lighter than I had hoped. The taste has the feel of a fairly thick high FG body ushering in a balanced attack of grapefruit hop and pine hop bitterness that seem to interchange back and forth in strength. There is a persistent malty sweetness and mild roastiness floating around in there too. Very nice, thanks again Gabe. Aroma - Fresh hoppy aroma of citrus and pine jumps right out, caramel and toffee follow quickly
Appearance - Clear orange/amber pour, solid off white head with good staying power, and some good lace
Flavor - Loads of malty sweetness up front, caramel, and some sweet toasty grain contribute. Bitterness builds slowly, but ultimately keeps things in check with a barely dry finish.
Palate - Medium body and carbonation, slightly sticky and palate coating
Overall - Big and brash, alcohol barely noticeable, a lot of malt character, as is common for the style. The hoppy nose is inviting, but the malt takes over after that. TheRealBastard (94), New Jersey, USA Aug 25, 2008 First of all, the wax on this one is a pain in the ass. This is loaded with cocain white head. The aroma is all hops with pine and citrus coming through. Taste is funky, almost too much going on. It’s safe to say this is as close to heartburn in a bottle as you can get. Good, but not great. Southern tier is becoming a hit or miss brewery for me. LearninBeer (133), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Aug 22, 2008 Getting rid of whatever is covering the bottle is a pain and makes you think it’s a cheap beer because they have to have a gimmick. The aroma is hops, citrus a little lemon, pine and maybe a touch of orange. The head is big, creamy, white with excellent lacing and is mostly diminishing. The color is golden orange and clear. The initial flavor is back of the tongue fuzzy feel with a little taste of citrus - grapefruit/lemon then the bitterness sets in with a nice feel on the tongue. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish long.
