Commercial Description:
Heavy Weizen explores the inner depths of creativity and craftsmanship, taking a style of ale that is delicate and quaffable and shaping it into something exuberant and sturdy. The foundation of Heavy Weizen begins with prodigious quantities of North American malted barley and wheat. Next, the finest European hops are added to complement this ale's unique disposition by giving spicy aromas. Its spirit is forged during fermentation where our Bavarian weizen yeast consumes sugars and creates divine flavors reminiscent of bananas and cloves. Then, by aging this ale, we allow the divergent characteristics to blend together, becoming one. To capture Heavy Weizen's spirit, this wheat ale remains unfiltered to leave some of the yeast in the bottle. Serving this ale with a wedge of lemon is recommended, but optional. 18 plato, 38 IBUs, 2-row pale malt, malted white wheat, hallertau magnum, saaz.

Bomber acquired via trade. Pours a cloudy orange color with a large white head. The aroma is full of spices, some banana and peppery zest. The flavor follows the basic hefe formula in many ways; loads of clove, some yeast, banana, a lighter wheat flavor, and a full creamy mouthfeel. The major difference is in the zesty peppery flavor, and a large alcohol burn. Quite nice. Chesty Puller drinks this when he wants a Hefe.

Bottle courtesy of tytoanderso via trade. Pours a murky hazy golden color with a large off white head that has excellent retention and nice lacing. Aroma of wheat, yeast, sweet malts, and clovey spices. Mouthfeel is pretty thick and syrupy on this one, and esthers, wheat, yeasts, cloves, coriander and lots of malt sweetness stand out. There is a little astringency and bitterness in the finish once the malt sweetness subdues. In a world of tasteless hefe’s this one rises to the occasion and sticks out above most of the tasteless crap out there.

Sampled at the NY Brewfest on 9/12. Not able to give a very accurate rating due to the sheer number of brews sampled. Loads of rich banana flavors. Hits your mouth in all the right ways. Nice large body. There is a reason this is the better than 99.4% of this kind.

Bottle in trade. Thanks
Pours a hazy golden color with a nice offwhite head. Smell is wheaty and lightly alcoholic. Taste is quite alcoholic at 1st, followed by wheat. Didn’t get much in the way of spiced yeast or banana or clove, but instead lots of booze and wheat. The alcohol kills it for me, and just another imperialized beer that shouldn’t have been imperialized...

My last comments did not go through the submitter so here is the abbreviated version: not a bad wheat with some amped well hidden alcohol and nice banana/clove tones but it has a bit of a bitter edge at its end and lacks a potent aroma.

Cloudy vibrant yellow pour with decent head on the initial pour. Sweet fruity aroma. The flavor was a wonderful blend of bananas, cloves and wheat yeasties. A fairly good level of Euro hops made this enjoyable. The alcohol was noticeable, but not distracting one bit. I like this one.

Tap at Stubs. Lots and lots of banana in the nose. Nice spicey clove, followed by wheat and lots of bread. Nice peppery thing going on as well. Good stuff

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is very spicy and full of clove, yeast, banana, citrus, and wheat. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium thin spicy mouthfeel with a mild amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. The beer was a little too spicy for my tastes but still is a solid offering from Southern Tier.
