Commercial Description:
Heavy Weizen explores the inner depths of creativity and craftsmanship, taking a style of ale that is delicate and quaffable and shaping it into something exuberant and sturdy. The foundation of Heavy Weizen begins with prodigious quantities of North American malted barley and wheat. Next, the finest European hops are added to complement this ale's unique disposition by giving spicy aromas. Its spirit is forged during fermentation where our Bavarian weizen yeast consumes sugars and creates divine flavors reminiscent of bananas and cloves. Then, by aging this ale, we allow the divergent characteristics to blend together, becoming one. To capture Heavy Weizen's spirit, this wheat ale remains unfiltered to leave some of the yeast in the bottle. Serving this ale with a wedge of lemon is recommended, but optional. 18 plato, 38 IBUs, 2-row pale malt, malted white wheat, hallertau magnum, saaz.

Bottle. Neat, glowing, flourescent yellow with a white head. Lemon, grass, hay and light flowers in the nose - american wheat yeast strain. Flavor has notes of lemon, some wheat, an ample level of herbal noble hops. grassy. Pleasantly sweet. Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Imagine a high gravity American Wheat and this is what you got. I disagree with the catergorization of German Hefe on a few levels.

Pours properly cloudy with a well-formed white head. The nose is soft and muddled, heavy on the clove and wheat scents, with an almost marshmallow fluffiness but more weighed down by the heavy body. Flavor-wise it’s rich and sticky with a light bite of spice, basically similar to so many other imperial hefeweizen, but it has a nice chewiness and a flavor that centers mostly on the wheat with less of a spice and clove presence. Simple, I guess, but not bad or undrinkable.

22oz bottle, courtesy of Stine. Thanks, Eben! Pours a hazy, whitish-golden color; thin, off-white head with minimal retention. Plenty of bananas and cloves and sticky sugar in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: viscous bananas and belgian sugar; some dry yeast and cloves, but overall a very sticky hefeweizen; hefeweizens shouldn’t be sticky. Lengthy, bananas and dry clove finish; plenty of sugar.

22 oz bottle Discount Liquor Voorhees NJ- Pours a nice clear yellow coloring. Smells are of orang/hop smells and tastes. Finishes really well.

Poured from a 22 oz. Clear, bright yellow. Sesame seeds, orange and vodka, ginger and vanilla on the nose. Distant suggestions of pine, alcohol, asian spices. Hot flavor offers allegiance to banana rum, accented by candy sugar and clove spice; the light base imbued with this level of alcohol effectively suffocates the delicate nuances of wheat. Simple and tepid, but inoffensive. Prickly in the mouth, and overly weighty. Dull, and uninspiring, but reasonable enough.

Bottle. Poured a golden color, slight unfiltered wheat cloud/haze, with a white head. Aroma of wheat and banana. It has the flavor (wheat, banana, clove, slightly spicy) that you expect from a Hefe, but a "Heavy" bigger Hefe, I expected a little more. Southern Tier has set the bar high with this series of beers, this one, while very good, is not quite up to the level of some of their other offerings.

22 oz bomber-Poured a orange color w/no head. Faint wheat aroma. Faint wheat flavor w/a touch of lemon & spice, but not much else. Beer was absolutely flat; no carbonation whatsoever. This had to be a bad bottle; I can’t imagine this beer is supposed to be this way, especially based on other reviews. This was a new arival where I ordered it so it wasn’t improperly stored @ the bar/store. Bartender tried it & we poured it out; he said the same thing "I’ve never had this beer, but I can’t imagine it’s supposed to taste like that". They didn’t even charge me for it. Had to be a bad bottle. I’ll rerate it if I get an opportunity, but this is how ths one tasted. They had several other Southern Tier brews there; this one made me reluctant to try them.

Pours a golden color with a white head. Aroma is of bubblegum, lemon, cloves, wheat, and yeast. Not much of an alcohol aroma. Flavor is pretty sweet with bubblegum, lemon, and cloves. Finishes dry with the wheat, yeast, and slight hint of alcohol warming. Not my favorite from Southern Tier but still pretty good.
