Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Deep brown bordering on black with lots of ruby tint when held to the light. Nice-sized cream head that thins quickly but leaves a trail of lacing. Great roasty toasted smells with a touch of rye and nice hoppy floral aroma. Definitely a different style of brew as the bite of the hops is stunted a bit by the toasty malts. The spices remind one of cinnamon and nutmeg, and some bright citrus also hides behind the mixture of hops and malt. Despite 9% ABV, the mixture of sweet, sour, bitter, and smokiness in this beer balances out nicely and makes for a nice manageable drink.

0.65 l bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Dark reddish brown color. Sweet, roasty, hoppy and perfumed aroma with licorice. Bittersweet and roasty flavor with lemony hops, licorice and chocolate. Hint of sharp alcohol. Fairly karbonated and fizzy. A bit muddy flavor, roasted malts and lemony hop are not such a great combination.

21-AUG-2009, bottle @home. Again a wonderfull beer from Southern Tier. Very dark brown with beige head. Nice bitter hoppy nose, but also something more, like mint, coffee, and chocolate. Very complex taste with the above elements. Very creamy , and highly drinkable since it is low carb. For an american strong ale it is very drinkable. Lovely beer.

(Bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-08-18) Deep dark brown and almost clear. Medium sized and lightly tan coloured head. Hops, sweetness and liquorice in aroma. Medium bodied, warming and dryish palate with medium carbonation. Roastedness, malts, hops, sweetness, liquorice, bitterness, alcohol and ash in taste. Alcohol, roastedness and bitterness in aftertaste.

Looks black in the glass until I hold it to the light and see that’s it’s just very dark brown. Barely tan, creamy and full head. Gentle and persistent roast aroma encapsulated by leafy hops. The dense head tempers the strength of the beer and lends a creaminess throughout the sip. Deeply roasted and the beer stays true to its dark roots. The hops come through in strength in the finish, very floral, though they can’t become as dynamic over the darker malt base. I’m consistently amazed by the ability of Southern Tier, they’ve done it again in my book. Even the lacing is solid. Creamy burnt malt flavors coat my mouth and the ABV is a warming afterthought in my chest.

Pours ruby with a fully receding off-white head. Notes of thick grapefruit, resinous hops, pine, caramel, alcohol, raisin and salty. Full to heavy bodied with moderate carbonation.

(Bottled, 0.65l) Clear, very dark reddish brown with a smallish, tanned, firm and lasting head. Very nice, aromatic-hoppy nose combined with sweetish licorice and anise. Flavor is slightly less intriguing, with sweetish malt, some licorice, and exotic fruit from the hops - but they don’t blend as well as in the aroma. Medium body, maybe slightly thin, but smooth and easily drinkable. Good, but not outstanding.

Too sweet! Dark ruby color and modest head. Nice hop bitter after-taste. Solid mouth feel.
