Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Quite hoppy aroma for a it black beer. It is topped with a tan head. Lots of citrus and burnt malt aroma though. Quite a light palate with a tiny hint of sweet cherries and a lot of dark toasted malt.

Bottle. Small tan head with good retention, no visible carbonation, transparent body, fair amount of lacing, and a reddish brown hue. The aroma was hoppy, pine, citrus, and malt. The flavor was malty, hoppy, hint of spice, some dark fruits, and mildly bitter. The mouthfeel was tingly and a light-medium bodied beer. A nicely brewed beer, not overly hoppy tasting and worthy of a try.

Bottle sample at Noogfest High 5 thanks to Butters. Poured black with a thin off-white head. Citrus hop aroma with a malt and spice backing. The flavor found grapefruit with a caramel malt background. Medium body and medium bitterness throughout.

Evil looking black with 2" thick chocolate top that fills the tulip glass. High pitch floral notes nearly cause an outage of the olfactory senses, they are so overwhelming. Outstanding depth and complexity to the flavor, yet restrained. Peach and tangerine with deep candi malts then floral hops all the way--no off-flavors. Eminently flavorful and drinkable.

Sampled on tap at Brixie’s 75th anniversary beer tasting in Brookfield, IL. Poured to my fluted fest glass a clear brown hue with amber tones showing through. The head was off white/light tan, thick and foamy. The lacing was also thick and clingy. The nose was citrus and a light resiny aroma. The flavor had a nice roasted, caramelly nature along with a steady hop bitterness that remained into the finish. A nice variation on one of my favorite themes,...IPA

Bottle provided by Kevin (thanks) and shared with Jeff at our little post MiBGF Saturday Night tasting:

Deep brown hue with ruby highlights, frothy tan head and spotty lace. The aroma is initially resiny and piney with apricot, grapefruit and fig esters. Some coffee, charred and caramel malt vapours along with a hint of butternut and peat. The taste is sweet malts and anise followed by some hop spice and bitterness, Dark fruits and and smoky peat character near the finish. The mouth feel is lush and somewhat oily with sharp edges, a touch astringent. Very nicely done. I wanna see even more of these "Black IPA’s" for I seem to dig them very much.

bottle poured a dark brown bordering on black with a nice two finger frothy tan head. aroma has surprising citrus pine hops, mild malt, banana, sweet chocolate, and some yeast. a lot more than anticipated so far. mouth feel is medium and the carbonation on the low side. flavor again has an overlaid citrus pine blast, ample sweetness, light bitterness, chocolate, brown malt, faint roast, and some alcohol. interesting that there is a sweet citrus ipa layered over a brown ale. quite enjoyed this one.

Deep brown pour with off white/tan head and lace. Barnyard aroma with a hint of citrus. Straw and sweet caramel malt with a decent finishing bitter. A tad thin but very nice.
