Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Noogfest High 5. Sample from a bottle thanks to Butters. Black-brown with red hints and a thin light tan head. Aroma is spicy, malty. Taste is molasses, sweet caramel, light cocoa, bitter finish.

courtesy of tpd975. pours black, with beige/mocha head. Interesting approach to these new black IPA beers. aroma very hoppy, hints of oak, malts. Taste, light roasted malts, chocolate, yeasty, some floral hops and spices. Hops give this an nice twist, some delicate bitterness but nothing that overpowers the whole palate. As it warmed up, the beer gained a little bit of the wood/oak.

Bomber. The body was dark brown, nearly dark copper with a khaki colored head. The aroma was sweet caramel with some almonds and bubblegum. The taste was largely cola with some milk chocolate. Thick and syrupy. Obviously a big dog, this was a little bit of a let down as I expect more from Southern Tier. However, it was about what I expect from the black India Ale style brews. Hoppy with an unbalanced porter character that just does not mix well.

Bottle shared with the guys at the Barrios’ 500th Swallow Tasting. Very dark near black with maroon highlights and big bubble off white head. Great aroma of sweet citrusy hops. Flavor of piney hop and almost burnt malt. Extremely interesting mix. Wow.

Dark IPA is a strange new trend but this is probably a favorite of the genre. This poured a dark brown to black color. The aroma contains some chocolate, caramel. citrus, and dark fruit. The flavor contains some oranges, raisins, caramel, chocolate. The finish is malty, then sour, then bitter. All over the board. Overall a pretty good and interesting beer.
