Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

On tap at Coles, Buffalo NY. Deep dark cola pour. Small white head. Aromas of big sticky hops, dark malts, woody.Taste is sharp somewhat harsh hop bitterness up front, some malty richness. Hops a little harsh IMO. Pretty good

Pours dark brown, almost black. No light shines through...looks like a porter, honestly. Smells like an IPA, with oak scent. I’m not always a big fan of the oak. But the taste....whoa....they tout this as the opposite of Unearthly, and yeah....it is. It’s kinda strange. It’s definitely very strong (9% ABV), but it’s not just hop overkill. It’s definitely a strong, dense beer. You can taste the oak too, I think. Palate is kinda creamy, didn’t have the bite or crispness I was hoping for, actually. Would I buy it again? Probably, although not too frequently. The price was right, and it’s a good "antithesis of Unearthly", as they called it. Not the best Southern Tier brew there is, but another great offering from them...they never fail to impress

On tap at RNH (NYC): This beer is quite simply a Bomber. Dark chocolate notes with caramel niggets. Eclectic senses of a drak chocolate stout. I’m pwn3d. Please excuse this meaningless rating.

Bomber pours dark brown with amber highlights and a big beige head. Aroma is citrusy hops. Flavor is sweet then roasty malt and a little bit of pineapple from the hops.

courtesy of tpd975. pours black, with beige/mocha head. Interesting approach to these new black IPA beers. aroma very hoppy, hints of oak, malts. Taste, light roasted malts, chocolate, yeasty, some floral hops and spices. Hops give this an nice twist, some delicate bitterness but nothing that overpowers the whole palate. As it warmed up, the beer gained a little bit of the wood/oak.

Bomber. The body was dark brown, nearly dark copper with a khaki colored head. The aroma was sweet caramel with some almonds and bubblegum. The taste was largely cola with some milk chocolate. Thick and syrupy. Obviously a big dog, this was a little bit of a let down as I expect more from Southern Tier. However, it was about what I expect from the black India Ale style brews. Hoppy with an unbalanced porter character that just does not mix well.
