Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Bottle shared with the guys at the Barrios’ 500th Swallow Tasting. Very dark near black with maroon highlights and big bubble off white head. Great aroma of sweet citrusy hops. Flavor of piney hop and almost burnt malt. Extremely interesting mix. Wow.

Dark IPA is a strange new trend but this is probably a favorite of the genre. This poured a dark brown to black color. The aroma contains some chocolate, caramel. citrus, and dark fruit. The flavor contains some oranges, raisins, caramel, chocolate. The finish is malty, then sour, then bitter. All over the board. Overall a pretty good and interesting beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black in color. Roasted caramel aroma, touch of floral hops. Flavors are true to the aroma with piney earthiness. Little bit sweeter as it warms. Finish is hoppy, but sweet. Tasty take on a favorite style.

It’s Southern tier IPA with some added rich toffee-like and cocoa notes and complex fruit tones, fantastic! Pours a good solid dark brown with gold-brown highlights and a bit of head, medium fine carbonation. Smells of sticky malts and light piney hops. Tastes of all the above, with the piney hops setting off the cocoa demerera and toffee brown-ale character. A welcome style challenge.

Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head.Aromas of sweet caramel malts followed by a rush of hops. (to me it almost had a cola like aroma)Taste is of a wonderful balance of those malts and hops, with the piney hop really peaking out in the end.Great bitter finish as well. What a great brew!

semi-opaque black body, medium-dark tan thin creamy head that is tallish, lasts. aroma is pine resin hops, grapefruit pith, roasted malt. flavor is bitter roasted malt, strong resiny hop, some licorice root, and a bit of hidden syrupy caramel malt. not too boozy but the alcohol is present like a splash of gin. kind of a hybrid mix of a IIPA, a schwarz, and a barley wine.

4/30/2009: Southern Tier Iniquity is dark brown in color topped by a frothy tan head and beautiful lacing. Overall its appearance is quite pretty. It has a damn nice aroma that is hoppy and fresh with a lots of orange-chocolate in it. The flavor has a really nice, caramelized maltiness without being overly sweet. The great citrus and pine hoppiness stick throughout. This beer is big, thick, smooth, and creamy. Actually, it is almost syrupy, but it is so good. Overall, Iniquity is a FANTASTIC beer!

22 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 9.0% by Vol. / 21’ Plato / Debittered black malt / kettle hops: chinook, cascade / hop back: willamette / dry hops: cascade, centennial) shared by Tmoney99 at Dilly Deli in Mariemont, Ohio. Thanks Tom! Rating #187 for this beer.
