| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 12, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours basically a black body with a finger-width, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma is pretty nice. Lots of moderately sweet, floral pines and citrus. Some nice caramel and mango too. When this warms up for a few minutes, the chocolate and lightly roasted malts come in and make this very nice smelling after mixing with the hops and fruit. Flavor is much the same. Starts off with moderately sweet, toasty caramels before the sweet citrus, moderate pines, and mango make up the middle. The black malts and chocolate come in during the finish along with a bit of a molasses taste. Lots of citrus and unaggressive pine come in as well drying this out. Lingering taste is really enjoyable. A nice mix of chalky roast, piney citrus, sweet malts, and a light chocolate that lasts for quite awhile. Palate is medium bodied, smooth, and a bit chewy. Overall, a really good beer. I like the big IPA taste mixed with the black malts. They did a very impressive job with this and I can’t wait to have more in the future. jeffc666 (1894), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 11, 2009 All the good of an imperial styled beer without the bad of the dreaded brown ale style. Loads of hops both in the flavor and the aroma. Good amount of sweetness, which leads to a surprise with the palate. It is much less sticky then I would have expected. Quite good, one of these guys better beers. DrBayern (1137), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 11, 2009 22 oz. bottle. Dark mahogany under a big, creamy, tan head. Fresh hoppy aroma, molasses, roasted grains, even some dark chocolate in the aroma. Medium to full body, smooth and creamy palate, yet dry. Interesting flavor profile with a molasses sweetness up front, but lots of spicy hop bitterness in a long, bitter finish. brewblackhole (1384), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 11, 2009 One of the best new beers I have tasted this year. Aroma has changed on me as it warmed. Upon opening the bottle,I got the huge rush of fresh hopshuge and satisfying, with just enough chocolate malt that if you were blindfolded you would know this could not be a pale ale. As this warmed, that chocolate brownie mix aroma began to dominate ,always with the hops giving occasional blasts, taste is a very flavorful Chocolate syrup / maybe some bakers bitter chocolate,a hint of anise in finish, and the rich hopping just flowing through the whole mixture. It is absolutely the best of both(malt, hops) worlds. You can tell there is a high ABV,but you really can’t taste it All these wonderful flavors ,this strange dark color, what does it mean grasshopper?Absolutely amazing. Again ,you come into a new year with 1300+ ratings and you think you can’t taste anything really new,but the brewers always prove you wrong Goodgrief (1153), Middletown, Delaware, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 11, 2009 Had a little white wine with my chicken cacciatore birthday dinner. I needed something dark and bold to follow this up. I went with this beer. Perfect choice. Dark pour, hugely dark with 2 finger head. Lacing all over the glass. Beautiful. A hugely hoppy aroma. Before even a sip, I was anticipating greatness. I was not dissapointed. Thick chalky chocolate, caramel malts just punched in the face by a piney hopped bully. The flavors were almost perfectly balanced. I loved it! Ughsmash (4052), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 11, 2009 Thanks to Peter for the bomber! Poured clear, deeper brown with a surprisingly short cap of tan head. The aroma picked up an interesting blend of malts (chocolate and molasses with a sweet complexion) supporting bright pine and citrusy hoppage.. really well-balanced. The flavor was just as good.. molasses led the malt base with coffee, black patent, and chocolate in there too.. quite bitter on the edges with pine, citrus zest, and floral character.. long bitter finish carried through some of the tasty malt. Medium-plus bodied with low-to-moderate carbonation on the palate.. balance was spot on, and the 9% didn’t show until after the drink. mabel (2626), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Clear, very dark brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Roasted nutty malt flavour. Medium-full body is smooth. Drinkable and pleasant.
