Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Brewed in the USA... Courtesy of friend Woody Chandler !!! Pours a very dark brown color with a small dissipating beige head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, prunes and malts. Taste of dark malts, plums, soy sauce and bourbon flavors. Mouthfeel is medium in body, well balanced, dry and finishes with a slight alcohol warmth.

Bomber. Dark beer with great head. Drank at ~50 degrees rather than the recommended 40-45, which would probably subdue the hops a bit. Lots of hop bitterness and citrus on top of a malt body that includes some cocoa (de-bittered black) and is quite smooth. Blindfolded, I don’t know if I’d guess his were black, but I’d know it wasn’t pale.

Bottle shared by BA’s Woody Chandler. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a medium sized beige head. The nose had notes of citrus, toast, caramel, and pine. Tastes of toast, pineapple, and grapefruit zest. Not nearly as sweet as ST’s other big IPAs making it much more pleasing to my palate.

Garnet color with a tan head. Mostly sweet malty aromas of black malts and multigrain toast. Medium body. Typical strong ale flavors of pit fruits, black roasted malts, and bittering hops.

Bottle at Dayton Ale Fest. Pours a dark, rich brown, almost black with little to no head. Aroma is roasted malts and hops. Notes of pine, citrus, chocolate, caramel, and a tiny bit of coffee come out. On the palate, it is a bit thick and dry. The flavor brings out the toasted malts and some strong hops, balancing the beer nicely. It finish bitter and dry. A very good beer.
