Poured a dark brown color with okay head and good lacing. Aroma was lots of pine and citrus hops, as it warmed could smell the caramel malts. Flavor was much the same with the lots of hops that pushed out the chocolate that should have been there. Good brew, doesn’t fit the label though.

Dec 27, 2009 Bought this bomber in Northville, MI. It poured a dark brown, with off white head. The aroma was strong, and sweet, with some raisin and caramel. The flavor followed with lots of caramaly goodness, and some slight grassy hops. Weird, but great beer. Cheers!

Dec 27, 2009 Black pour, thick foamy beige head. Aroma- sweet citrus, spicey and floral. Very good balance of bitter hop and roast malt. Some alcohol is noticeable, medium thin body, sticky finish.

Dec 26, 2009 Bottle shared by JoeTheYounger. Pours black with a short beige head. Aroma is citrus, caramel, sweet tangerine, some roast and pine. Flavor is some roasted nuts, a smooth bitterness, moderate sweetness. Medium to full bodied and well carbonated.

Dec 26, 2009 Bottle. A lot more easy to drink than you would think of an "Imperial Black IPA". Soy, raisin and hops in the nose. Taste of licorice, citrus hops and some smoke.

Lots of hops and licorice. Too thin body for an IIPA but good for a black IPA.

Aroma - fresh oranges, smokey black malt and toffee. Brings a smile to my face!!
Flavor - Tastes like a mix between a stout and ipa, you get the dark fruits and soy sauce from the stout. Citrus and floral hops from ipa, damn fine combination!!
Palate - medium bodied with decent carbonation. Texture is slick and finish is bitter and last for awhile.
Overall - Great job by Southern Tier, really nice mix of two different styles!! Price is a little much but worth a try if you love stouts and ipa’s

Dec 20, 2009 Poured dark brown with faint brown highlights when held up to the light. Thin tan head. Nose is roasty, coffee, dark fruits (plum, raisins). First sip and the alcohol is present. Hoppy and dry as well, roasty, slightly burnt flavor. A bit harsh on the tongue.

Dec 19, 2009 Draught @ Brouwer’s Café: Black, and I don’t mean Stout like black, simply black, nothingness. Moderate to large foamy off-white head. Decent lacing. Citrusy nose, a little pineapple, some hops. Seems like a black IIPA. Very much like that on the tongue. Very malty, sweet citrusy. Doesn’t seem all that "black". Nice body and mouthfeel, a little thick. My kind of beer. Warming, minor alcohol but its not bad. Had I not seen the color I would have never guessed. To me its not as harsh as Un*Earthly can be. Choice stuff, good amount of malts. Recommended.
