It thins out a little but stays put to the bottom of the glass. It leaves a generous, thick sheet of foam all the way down the glass. It has a strong citrus aroma that’s detected from arm’s length. It’s all grapefruit and pine. It is medium-full bodied and incredibly smooth and soft in the mouth. It tastes squarely between sweet and dry. It’s very well balanced; hoppy, but not overly bitter. The finish seems to have a touch of roast or ash. It is thoroughly enjoyable and unique. wu1sabes (18), USA

Aroma of citrusy hops and sweet malt create a multi-flavor explosion in your mouth. Easy to drink and after each taste you find new flavors. Would recommend to everyone, hop heads and those who like a porter or stout. jimbowood (953), Athens, Georgia, USA

Truly awesome black iipa. The first black iipa I’ve sampled. Like a porter blended with dreadnaught. Awesome! carruthm (1134), Seattle, Washington, USA

Inviting color. The aroma was intoxicatingly complex. Sweet dark malts with a subtle hop character that became more pronounced with time. The highlight is the sweet malts though. The taste showcases the hops more as it becomes more bitter. The palate is perfect, just a wonderful balance here. bdigital (586), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 30, 2009 Bottle: Pours a dark mahogany bordering on black. Floral hops dominate the nose along with some light fruitiness and an ever-so-slight malt tone. Full bodied. Flavor is a bit more balanced than the nose with some roasted malts fighting their way through to compliment the centennial hop explosion. I really enjoyed this brew and could drink it all day long. The 9% was hidden very well. BgThang (118), Texas, USA

Visiting the taphouse bar and grill in norfolk. Sister to the one in hampton. Met the bartender who was kewl and found out he just was in austin a couple of week before hand. Tried this on tap, do not remember seeing it in ST’s lineup.
The appearance is blackish with a nich fine creamy head.
The nose. Dang this is straight up bad ass. Hops, hops, and some maltyiness comes through.
The miuthfeel is creamy, nice hop presence that is not to overbearing and finishes with that nice hoppy/malty balance.
If its as good as this in the bottle then I want some.
I feel it could benefit from some cellaring. This is due to some boozyness in the mouthfeel
Overall a very fine beer that will sneak up on ya
Serving type: on-tap

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jun 11, 2009 One of the best new beers I have tasted this year. Aroma has changed on me as it warmed. Upon opening the bottle,I got the huge rush of fresh hopshuge and satisfying, with just enough chocolate malt that if you were blindfolded you would know this could not be a pale ale. As this warmed, that chocolate brownie mix aroma began to dominate ,always with the hops giving occasional blasts, taste is a very flavorful Chocolate syrup / maybe some bakers bitter chocolate,a hint of anise in finish, and the rich hopping just flowing through the whole mixture. It is absolutely the best of both(malt, hops) worlds. You can tell there is a high ABV,but you really can’t taste it All these wonderful flavors ,this strange dark color, what does it mean grasshopper?Absolutely amazing. Again ,you come into a new year with 1300+ ratings and you think you can’t taste anything really new,but the brewers always prove you wrong
