Like a DIPA but with roasted malts, not as sweet and slightly less hops. Light mouth feel, not thick and heavy like Southern Tier Oat, but the appearance is almost identical. Almost like a hopped up, higher alcohol guinness. At $7.49 a 22oz bottle, it’s worth trying, but not an everyday buy. Recommended.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Dec 20, 2009 Poured dark brown with faint brown highlights when held up to the light. Thin tan head. Nose is roasty, coffee, dark fruits (plum, raisins). First sip and the alcohol is present. Hoppy and dry as well, roasty, slightly burnt flavor. A bit harsh on the tongue. 5000 (2579), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Draught @ Brouwer’s Café: Black, and I don’t mean Stout like black, simply black, nothingness. Moderate to large foamy off-white head. Decent lacing. Citrusy nose, a little pineapple, some hops. Seems like a black IIPA. Very much like that on the tongue. Very malty, sweet citrusy. Doesn’t seem all that "black". Nice body and mouthfeel, a little thick. My kind of beer. Warming, minor alcohol but its not bad. Had I not seen the color I would have never guessed. To me its not as harsh as Un*Earthly can be. Choice stuff, good amount of malts. Recommended.

| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Basically black with a small light brown head. Very sweet, almost sugary aroma with light notes of sweetish hops. Flavour is straight forward sugary with a light green hop flavour and some roasted notes alongside caramell. Mouthfeel is light and rather smooth. EithCubes (2164), Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 10/20 | Dec 18, 2009 Bomber. Big Centennial and Cascade nose with a richer, darker malt profile than expected. Black pour with a lacing, creamy tan/light brown head. Taste is dark and sweet, earthy muddy hops with a surprisingly still-bright punch, has some caramel and cookie dough with light vanilla and noticeable alcohol – essentially a meaty double IPA with de-bittered black patent. Light, smooth bitterness on the bottom end, and some truly inspired, rounded chocolate malt. Full but not fat body and lightly crisp, the overall picture is less murky and heavy than anticipated, and better-integrated and –attenuated than others from ST, though I can’t help thinking that Lagunitas or FFF would squash this in a ReplicAle sort of situation. Might be a nice, unusual choice for a stew or chili. radiomgb (2056), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada

Aroma is very Hoppy, good roast, quite malty, noticable sweetness, citrus.
Flavour is quite smooth, light alcohol, lots of citrus, malty and sweet.
Hoppy mouth, medium body, mod carb.
Fiinishes long, warming and quite Hoppy.
It’s pretty good. I like the batle between the hops and malts.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 17, 2009 Bottle. Pours a nearly opaque dark brown that shows some light at the edges. Aroma is redolent of hops and dark roasted malts, with a bitter character. Flavor is semi-sweet chocolatey with a nice bitter hop finish. A little thin.

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 14, 2009 Had this on tap after in the same glass I had a bottle of Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree IPA immediately before it, so I can’t say this is accurate. Pours a pitch black color with a nice beige head that leave a sticky lacing. Aroma of citrus and pine, with dark malts beneath it. Taste is surprisingly bitter, with molasses and roasted malt leading the way, and finishing with a lot of hop bitterness. Full mouthfeel that hides the ABV.
