Crystal clear dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head. Big grapefruit nose. Creamy medium body. Grapefruit and pine mid-palate. Long resiny finish. What this has to do with a helles is beyond me; it’s really a DIPA with lager yeast. But helles describes it better than "european strong lager," which is another goony RB arbitrary decision based entirely on abv. cheapdark (2049), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Jan 11, 2009 ST KRAMPUS SLFTO: On tap at the Bocktown, quite a nice place. Fairly clear but a little darker than a pale lager. Thin creamy head. Has a quite hoppy or pine aroma about it. Taste is really hoppy bitter, unexpected since this is supposedly a lager. Almost comes across like an APA or an imperial pilsner. Decent carbonation on this hoppy puppy. Constant oily soapy bitterness that just plain overwhelms the palate. Longer bitter linger on finish. Not as strong on the taste buds as the 9% here would indicate. jeff789 (422), Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 11, 2009 I love chinook hops... The almost medicinal/herbal flavors they create make for some of the best(or worst depending on your perspective) beers... Pours a deep copper with a nice white head that leaves good lacing... Huge hoppy aroma or citrus/herbs/pine... Tastes of big herbal hops with a bit of spice and a hint of the alcohol coming through... Medium Bodied with a lingering finish.... I assume the only reason this is a European Strong Lager is because of the yeast used... sebletitje (1999), Tampa, Florida, USA

Aroma is hoppy and malty with nice herbal nose that give the beer a very fresh nose.
Taste is again loaded with hops with underlying pine and herbal touch.
Overall taste remains fairly herbal with notes of sweet sugar and fruits.
Really got the feeling this beer was more of an IPA than a Helles Lager. iowaherkeye (1882), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 10, 2009 22oz bottle, no date from Swolf3, thanks Steven! Clear orange amber with a small off-white head, fading to a thick ring and sparse film before long. Grapefruit rinds and resiny pine are the hops up front. There is also some light mango and alcohol, but hard to pick out the malts other than being sweet. The flavor continues to be quite hop dominated (mainly pine) with a lightly sweet malt backbone. Semi-dry finish with bitterness peaking around a 4-5. Alcohol was present down the back of the throat, but didn’t seem like it was 9%. Medium-full body with light prickly carbonation. Another pretty good high gravity offering from Southern Tier.

Pours transparent auburn with a medium bubbly head and great lacing. Flavor is hop forward, sharp and crisp. The sweet malts finish it off. Palate is bitter. If you like hoppy lagers, this is your brew. Tripplebrew (503), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA

Flavor is pine and hops with nuts. Body is light with high carbonation. Definite bitter floral notes that offset it. Strange. topherh (943), Kearney, Missouri, USA
