Black with a red edge and medium beige head. Nice mix of dark milk chocolate and coffee, with some tar and liquorice. Full bodied and smooth. Well balanced.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 13, 2009 The favorite of the Southern Tier Stouts. This beer is what turned me on to stouts. And I’m proud of that. Its pour was a beautiful deep brown with off white head. Nice lacing. The aroma was roasted malts, reminiscent of a winter drink, coffee and chocolate combined. What a great idea. ChristianScheffel (4557), Odense, Denmark

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 9, 2009 Bottle. I’ve had this twice, once on draft at Malt and Vine ( HI Scrizzz!) and once out of bottle at Fretts house. Both were lovely. I would almost call this Speedway-lite if I might be forgiven. This is the sweetest of the 3 Southern Tier stouts I’ve had (Mokah, Oat and Jahva) , and for me falls right in the middle in terms of taste and complexity. It is black as sin, with a thick tan head, and the nose is indescribable: all the best things about sweet stouts rush to the fore; toasted marshmallow, coconut, milk chocolate, sweet espresso, maple, and dark fruit all jump out at you. The palate, if a shade sweeter than necessary is also redolent with big, joyous flavors. Not the masterwork of balance that the Oat is, but world ahead of the Jahva, I would buy this again for the sheer happiness this beer brings me. Sammy (4024), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 6, 2009 On-tap at Cole’s. Pretty good coffee beer, with significant and above-average mouthfeel based on mokah. Dark brown, creamy, tasty, bitternsweetness, though leaning on sweet. Pleasant mochah aroma. Maria (6286), Thisted, Denmark
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 6, 2009 It’s black with a creamy, light brown head. The aroma has massive notes of dark chocolate, filled chocolates and sweet coffee. The flavor is sweet and the mouthfeel is oily. It has notes of dark chocolate, filled chocolates, liquor and alcohol, that last and warm throughout the finish, where the chocolate also gradually fades out. It’s clearly a replacement for a desert, but it should be shared, otherwise I’m afraid it would be cloying. Hoptagon (144), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 3, 2009 22oz. Bomber. Inky black color with a very thin layer of off-white bubbles. Strong nose dominated by cocoa powder with some roasted coffee bean notes at the edges. Flavor is good, but fairly one dimensional. The semi-sweet chocolate just dominates the flavor and gives the beer a pervasive sweetness. If you can get past the sugary tones there are some decent java flavors that come through and lend a slight roasted character to the aftertaste. Hops are virtually unnoticeable and the alcohol is camouflaged nicely. Mouthfeel is relatively thin like all of the other Southern Tier stouts I have tried. Seems like the standard Southern Tier yeast may be too highly attenuating for these types of beers. Carbonation is relatively soft and the beer has an oily texture. Pretty good, but too sweet to enjoy the entire bomber solo. malrubius (1002), Valley Stream, New York, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 30, 2009 22 ounce bottle in snifter. Dark dark brown with lasting tan ring. Chocolate syrup bitter coffee mild alcohol aroma. Bitter chocolate dark roasted coffee some syrupy dark fruit medium bitter roasted lingering finish with mild alcohol burn. Medium full body. Decent enough. There are so many strong stouts out there, and so many are better than this, and then all the excessive flavor additions.... Makes me want a Sierra Nevada Stout...or two.
