Commercial Description:
“brewed for the harvest” This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11.0% abv • 238º L

Pours dark, very dark. It has a coffee and chocolate. Joe at John’s Grocery asked if I had had it yet and I responded "no". He said it is one of his favorite imperial stouts. I am not disappointed. It is one of my favorites as well.

Pouts dark brown with a trace of tan bubbles. Smells of oatmeal, earthy, sweet malt, some spice. Tastes sweet and chocolatey with some bitterness and a hint of brown sugar on the finish. Decent.

22 oz. bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville. Viscous chestnut brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, smoke, coffee, chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, oats, nuts, bitter coffee and caramel. Smooth, silky texture and full bodied. Alcohol is imperceptible. Everything an oatmeal stout should be.

Pours a dark black with a small creamy beige head. Thick sweet aroma of lots of oat, some soy, vinous, light raisin, dark fruit, vanilla , maple syrup and chocolate. FIrst taste is lots of sugary alcohol, vanilla and sweet oatmeal followed by bitter licorice and dark chocolate, finishing back with sweet oatmeal. Pretty oily flavor/texture. Slightly burnt tasting, some soy/vegetable. Lingering licorice/dark chocolate taste, a bit tannic. This tastes more like a Black Russian than a beer. Lots of alcohol in the finish... Creamy full body with fine sizzling carbonation. There are much better oatmeal stouts... like Boris.... of course mine is fresh.. but I can’t imagine the off-flavors getting any better with age, but we shall see. A meal for sure... good-luck finishing a whole bottle. Lots of great qualities... but just a bit out of balance.

Deep, dark black/brown pour. Thin tan head that disappears within minutes. Roasted malts, caramel, coffee, molasses (huge molasses), bitter and sticky. Very smooth on the palate. Bitter finish.

(Rating #1949)
