Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Draft at Capital Ale House Innsbrook, where the wife and I hit a quick late lunch the day before Thanksgiving. Off early from work, kids still at daycare, it was a good day, with a very nice beer. Clear medium copper, very slight but very long lasting white head. Biscuit malts with herbal, anise, and earthy hops. Aroma and flavor were straight matches, no surprise here. Also no change in profile as it warmed either. Good. Bitter dry finish. Liked this one.

POursa nice brown color with an off white head. Aroma is of some spices, a hint of nuts and a little biut of hops. Flavor was really smooth, nice mix of mild spices, maltniess and hops to keep the beer form being too sweet. Also hides the alcohl very well, did not realize this was 8%

[08 Bottle] Pours a deep dark clear glowing chestnut color with a medium frothy off-white head. Big fresh hoppy aroma, resin, pine and tropical fruits, also some toasty crystal malt and a hint of caramel. Mmm.. not sure what to make of this flavor wise... very hoppy, lots of earthiness, really green oily hops... plant like bitterness... what’s with all the green hops lately?!?!?! ruining all my favorite beers! some cedar, biscuit malts, crystal malt, touch of caramel. Medium bodied, a bit sticky, fluffy carbonation, a bit sharp. I guess the only thing to do is age the rest so those hops will disappear.

Clear red amber with good, foamy off-white head / Nose of dry hops and flowers and caramel nose / Medium body, some sweetness, but more than hoppy enough to match the big malts, and with good, long, finish / Floral flavors of burnt sugar, violets, chrysanthemum, pine, dry hops, and toffee / Either my taste buds have improved, or this beer has since 2007.

Bottle. Pour is a slightly brownish amber with a fluffy beige head and weak aromas. I can only pick up a touch of spice and malt. Flavor is much more developed… big and spicy, but unidirectional. Given the spiciness in the onset, I was initially thinking I missed something on first sip and there was some legitimate plot development. I don’t think I missed it… I just think it’s not there. Just a hint of a medicinal hops and a little bit of a nuttiness in the finish, but both of these are inconsistent and vary from sip to sip. Surprisingly mediocre for Southern Tier.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Alraomon. Thanks Sean! Pours a deep copper color with a small head. Average head retention and lacing. Hoppier aroma than expected... spicy, woody hops with an earthy quality. I see another rater compared this to another green budding plant, and I’m inclined to agree. That earthy, woody hoppiness is there in the taste as well, accompanied by a thyme-like herbal note as well as burned toast. Medium bodied. Quite interesting.

Summary: Smells wonderful, but a bit boring to drink. Aroma: Yeasty funk, coriander, cloves, dark fruits, really adds to the anticipation of the beer. Appearance: Dark brown, red highlights, thin beige head, no lace. Flavor: After the delicious aroma, honestly disappointing, somewhat sweet, raisins, undifferentiated malt flavors, fading towards a bitter coniferous finish. Palate: Very mellow, but tending towards watery.

POured a clear copper colro, with a smallish off white head. Smelled of rich caraamel malt and subtle hops, mixed with a little dark fruit. The mouthfeel was a tad bit watery right away. Carbonation was good, but it was a little thin. Flavors of sweet dark fruits, a little bready yeast, and malts all seem to blend together, but overall was a pretty uninteresting brew. A little toasty in its finish, and wasnt lacking on flavor, just a little in its complexity. Nothing offensive, but found it a bit boring.
