Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Pours clear amber into a snifter. Head quickly recedes to hug rim. Vanilla and citrus aromas. Crisp upfront with dark caramel turning syrupy. Sweet yet well balanced with a dry hop finish.

Pours a clear copper colour with a medium creme head that fades to a sudsy film. The nose is sprucey hops, roasted malts, and crystal malts. The booze is hidden very well in the aroma. The flavour is aggressively hoppy with a spicy crystal malt body that isnt as papery as other winter brews. This beer is very much reminiscent of The Bastard, though it is less citric. The flavour is also highlighted with resin pine and sweet, bready malts. It is slick and gently carbonated. Nice.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Reddish amber with lasting flat head and lace. Fresh hoppy aroma with some mild malt. Medium malty brown sugar with ripe red fruit and assertive hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Medium body and carbo. This one is nice and fresh, full of assertive flavors. Very good.

Bottle. Mahogany, clear appearance, small white head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, roasty malts, dark fruit. Flavor is a tiny bit of smoke, caramel, cocoa, and flavors similar to the aroma. Has a nice bitterfinish.

Yummmm - O! Fine, fine beer. Poured with a very nice foamy, frothy head - some large and small bubbles. Appealing amber color. Nose was some malt and bitterness. Flavor is a really good roasty, dryish yet bittersweet along with some caramel/toffee malt characteristics. Great body. Excellent finish. Would be a session but for the percentage.

Not bad. Imagine Yuengling but with actual hops you can taste and more alcohol. It does not have the spices associated with most winter beers. Very drinkable, but not Southern Tiers best offering. Second Tier.
