Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

12oz bottle from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Darker brown with small tan head. Aroma is caramel, aged alc that almost becomes perfumy, darker malt, sweeter. Flavor is dry grainy, caramel, slight dough and alc, plum, some very nice bitter caramelized malt comes out as it warms. Meidum to thin, lightly carbonated to watery body. Nice, but alc is a little off putting.

Bottle given by jsquire. Thanks, Jeff! Huge, frothy, slightly fizzy ivory head that was mostly lasting, splotchy amounts of lacing, carbonation noted, mostly transparent with a slight haziness, and an orange hue. Nose was caramel, sweet, hoppy, grapefruit, citrus, malty, and spicy. Ditto for the flavor with a thin and dry finish. Mouthfeel was slightly tingly and thin. Medium in body. A quaffable and enjoyable beer to drink even though there are stronger, bolder beers of this style available. Nicely balanced and worthy of a try IMO. Personally, I would drink this one again if given the opportunity.

Bottle- Unleashes a deep and murky mahogany from the bottle. Head is limited to about half an inch and steps back to the sidelines. Spicy (nutmeg, cinnamon), malty nose with hints of cognac and wood. Spiced sweet malts blend with woody , earthy flavours, and lead to a slightly bitter and hoppy, warming alcoholic finish. This one is meant for sipping, and as such, is quite enjoyable. Quite good.

Bottle from State Line. Pours hazy deep brownish with off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, some choclate, x-mas spices, and nuts. Tastes rich, malty, with defined chocolate, nut, and x-mas spice flavor components. Not one of my favorite ST brews, but not bad.

Molasses, caramelly, sweet aromas with hints of anise. Pours dark amber, purple outside. Thick coats your mouth. Malty, molasses, with hints of cinnamon. Very smooth.

To me this really tastes like a pale ale. Mild hops in the aroma and flavor, buts its flavor becomes a bit generic towards the end.

12oz bottle. Deep brown-amber color. Clean and filtered looking. A real malt bomb. This beer is very smooth and refreshing, with some semblances of a nice strong Brown Ale or the full richness of a German Doppelbock. It is a pretty unique winter seasonal beer by any means, a great offering from the up-and-coming Southern Tier.

Bottle sampled. Pours a dark brown with a small beigh head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, toffee, and notes of brown sugar. Flavor was rich and smooth with sweet caramel, fruit, toffee, and some spices medium to full body with a dry finish.
