Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Draft at Blind Tiger. Aroma is of english malt, some hops giving it a dryness. The flavor is the same, typical of the style, but could have been more flavorful.

On tap at the Blind Tiger. This one was not overly great, but not terrible either. Flavor had alot of the characteristics of the style, they were just not all that great tasting. Not too much in the way of hops. Palate was border line watery.

Medium brown body. Nutty brown aroma. Sweet malt flavor. Finish is chalky and crisp with a hop bitterness.

Tap @ Blind Tiger. I have absolutely no idea what happened here....Pours a gorgeous deep ruby with a small and quickly-dissipating head. Aroma is slight hop with caramel and malt thrown in for good measure. Taste is weak hops up front backed up by a weak and watery finish. This was a great disappointment and went absolutely nowhere.

Bottle from Winter 06/07. Poured a really cool shade of coppery amber with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up lightly-aged caramel, molasses, and dark fruits along with drier herbal and floral hoppage.. warm and welcoming with dusty undertones. The flavor was centered around aged caramel and lesser chocolate, with peppery spicage and dry herbal bitterness.. finished with warm spicy caramel and fruits. Medium-bodied with creamy carbonation across the middle and a fine balance between the sweetness and spiciness. This aged gracefully!

pours dark. smell is sweet and hoppy. taste is very hoppy. mouthfeel is slightly crisp. Too hoppy for me, drinkable, but overdone on the hops.

12 ounce bottle, pours slightly hazy burgundy color, with almost no head and resulting lack of lacing. The complex aroma is malty (carmelly, sweet), spicy, and somewhat vegetative with what appear to be noble hops which impart some grape/cherry notes. The taste is tart and bitter and dry throughout - much more aggressively hoppy than the aroma suggests - with light support from sweet caramel malts. Aftertaste is a bit stale. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonation is rather low and the palate is overall a bit astringent with the aggressive hoppiness and spicing. Consistent with another reviewer, I did find that it got significantly smoother as it warmed. Not a bad brew, but a bit on the rough side and not one of my favorite winter warmers.
