Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

12 oz bottle-ruby red color, slightly cloudy w/o much of a head. Faint malt aroma. Bitter hop finish w/a trace of caramel malt. Kind of short & flat. Has a slight medicinal aftertaste. Short, bitter finish. People keep raving about these beers; second one I’ve had. First one was a bad bottle; this one was nothing special.

Smell is somewhat malty and sweet. Appearance is clear dark brown with no gunk on the bottom of the bottle, must be filtered. No carbonation on the palate, nearly flat. Strong alky taste and pretty malty bitter. Difficult to enjoy for a lager lover. Alky content is very present in the flavor. Bitter lingering medicine finish.

Draft at SL. Pours a red-brown color, decent head and lacing. The aroma was roasty, juniper/spicey, caramel and brown sugar. The flavor was much the same, but the spicey spruce or juniper notes did not work for me, leaving behind a base beer that might have been more enjoyable, but too ESA/brown ale-ish for me to have fallen in love with anyway. Mouthfeel was full and zingy from the carbonation and spicing.

12 oz. bottle. Mahogany pour with a cream colored frothy head. Aroma of toffee malts generally, with some cookie or cake and a leafy/earthy component. Earthy malt flavors, with twiggy hops and a spicy touch at the end. Medium to full bodied with an even carbonation. Not a bad styling from ST.

Get a ridiculous aroma of hops with the glass still a ways away from my face. Nice. Pours a deep red color with a minimal head but nice lacing. Floral and citrus aroma. A slightly creamy texture. The flavor is predominately grassy and citrus hop though. Some sweetness makes this one pretty full bodied. Word to my 2007 secret santa for this one.

Slight Hop boquet from a beautiful deep ruby color with a small off white head. Big hop flavor balanced by a big load of malt with carmel, citrius and rasins benig the main flavors with a touch of toasted grains. Medium-heavy mouth feel and a blanced finish. Lack of boquet is this beers only fault

A good all around malt accented Winter Ale that is rich without being cloying or too heavy. This beer would have been huge say 10 years ago, but in the age of super size this beer is a welcome change.

got to sample this straight out of the tank @ the southern tier brewery. also picked some up in bottles. pours a dark red-brown with a light brownish head. nose is hoppy with a dab of citrus and spice. taste is malty with a nice roasty caramel character to it. can taste the alcohol a little. drink this one cold, as it gets a little too sticky when it warms up. mid-bodied with a bitterish finish. definately a good winter beer that can add some variety to a winter session full of porters and stouts.
