Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Pours a clear cola brown body with a small creamy beige head. Nice patchy lacing. Aroma is caramel and chocolate with hints of pine hops, ginger, and orange peel. Taste mirrors the aroma with a very dry finish. Decent winter warmer.

355 mL bottle. Dark brown with a touch of copper. Just a film of head. Aroma is hoppy, for such a dark beer. Tastes more like it looks, though. Lots of black coffee, along with some bitter chocolate, toffee, roasted malt, and some sweet fruit (cherries?). Alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is full, almost grainy on the tongue. Nicely carbonated. Good beer.

Rated 2/20/07: Good brew, not what I was expecting at all this monster is chock full of flavor. Aroma is dominated by some nice pine and light grapefruit hops, sweet malt presence follows. Beautiful amber pour with highlights of light brown and ruby red. Nice tan head and solid lacing. Medium bodied, the malt content is creamy and filling. Caramel malt with a nutty character, lightly roasted and bitter. Powerful citrus hops are a great compliment to this sturdy ale, didn’t expect the hoppiness but it was well received and satisfying.

12 oz bottle. Poured a clear copper/amber with a small off white head. Aroma of light chocolate, floral hops, caramel, pine and wood. Flavor was nutty with a touch of chocolate and pine. You could tell that this was a winter seasonal brew.

Pours nice dark copper with creamy head. Aroma smells of lots of woody, piney hops with chocolately caramelly malts. Flavor is full with a lot of spicy, woody hop bitterness, dry chocolatey type prescence, and overall woody earthy and bitter with some spicey depth. A pretty decent brew with good malt depth but the hop bitterness for this one is kind of overpowering. Cellared for a year: still pours an excellent creamy head-aroma is deep and woody but mellow. flavor is very smooth although the hop profile is still a bit limited-superbly creamy yet dry palate-very good

Nice bronzy copper, with a small but sturdy beige head. Woody, earthy, nutty aroma. Flavor has a hint of dark bread, with a musty, slightly spicy note. Dry, crisp finish.

(Bottle) Pours very deep dear red. Resin-ish hoppy and rather sweet aroma with tones of fruits, dried fruit, caramel, burned rubber, milk chocolate, some alcohol and maybe some anise. Sweet, dried fruit like flavour with some notes of caramel and dark fudge. Medium hoppy bur rather soft bitterness. Soft mouthfeel with a light dry ending. Medium body.

Bottle from Shadey. Nice brew. A nice, nutty, malty barley wine-style. Beautiful, ruby red appearance.
