Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

12oz bottle shared courtesy of zrrbrrt. I debated on rating this as I had it right after a couple of big beers that rated pretty damn high, but I will and will give this one the benefit of doubt. Poured a medium amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, caramel, and toasted malts. Tastes of citrus, hearbal ’ice tea’, pine and caramel.

Pours a clear bronzy woody amber with a grayish filmy head and some thin lacing. Aroma is initially light roasted malts, lots of medium toasty munich, some malt sweetness, and an earthy slightly herrbal hop character, some citrus and light mango as it warms. Light chocolate and roast, earth and dust, slight metalic hints, and some citrus and flowery hop flavor- mild hop bitterness. Smooth and flavorful. Good winter warmer. Perfect for a cold Easter Night.

12oz bottle, no date from 46er3498, thanks Tom! Pours a clear orangish brown with a 1/2 finger beige head. Aroma of sweet caramel and toffee, nuts, and piney hops. Flavor has some spicy piney hops that are stronger than the aroma and do a decent job of fighting for dominance with the caramel toffee and nuts, but malts win in the end. Bitterness peaks at maybe a 4 (out of 10). Medium body with creamy slightly prickly carbonation. Nice.

On tap @ Coles Buffalo NY. Deep maroonish brown color. Spicy, malty somewhat hoppy. Good winter brew

12oz. bottle - pours clear copper, dark and reddish, with a very thing white head. Aroma is spicy hops up front, against a rich malt background. Flavour comprised of piney hops, with some notes of oranges, caramel malt, some breadiness towards the finish, which also hits you with spice that lingers a long time in the mouth. I love that. Mouthfeel is thick and robustly syrupy, which I really like on a beer like this. A great winter warmer.

12 oz bottle - pours clear dark copper, with a thin bubbly white head that leaves elegant lacing. West coast pney/citrusy hop aroma, but not over the top - neatly balanced with a good dose of malt. Flavour of earthy hops and fairly bitter too, with some orange peel and hot pepper. Medium bitter finish. A fine warming winter ale.

This is surprising. At first the hop taste is strong, but the finish you get a jolt of spice at the end that lingers.

This pours a reddish brown with a bubbly, well sustained tan head. Big malty brew here. The aroma is full of rich malts, lightly roasted, with bitter nuts and a light piney/earthy hoppiness to it. The flavor is pretty much all malt, sweet with a splunge of molasses, and a soothing piney bitterness. Not strong - for a winter ale, that is - but pleasantly warming.
