Aroma of heavy hops, citrus, and a bit of malt. Was not expecting as much hop aroma for a strong ale. Taste of hops and malt. This medium body brew is very well balanced and hides its alcohol very well. A nice tasting brew. ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 14, 2009 First rating in a long while. Bottle. Relatively faint aroma but there’s a sweetness. Crystal clear, dark amber body with a slightly off white head and excellent tree ring lace sticking to the glass. Head not all that large. A good amount of hops greats the tongue, although with a well balanced maltiness. I’ve had plenty of beers that have tried to be this beer, but very few have come close. There’s a bit of an oversaltiness that prevents it from being truly outstanding, but it is an excellent beer. It’s hard to believe that 273 raters could aggregate to so low a score on this. Tastes considerably lower than it’s 8%; I would have guessed 6.25%. Considerably better than it’s rating would suggest. Funknmilla (595), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA

Pours a clear amber color with a very short lived whitish head. Smell is rye, and light zesty hops and red ale like malt. Taste is similar with a rye like zesty hoppiness. Clean, bitter lasting flavor with a big rye flavor. Medium body with maybe a twinge of alcohol in the flavor. Pretty good. Braudog (3766), Dayton, Ohio, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 9, 2009 12 oz bottle. Nice smooth, copper pour with a small, slight off white head. Not much carbonation present. Notes of fruity hops, caramel and sweet sugar present on the aroma. Flavor consisting of booze, bread, and an unsettling, lingering sweetness. Having only drank the imperial line of beers from Southern Tier, I must say I am fairly unimpressed by this beer. I am aware that this is not the similar kind of offering as the imperial beers, but still I don’t think there is very much here. Having my expectations built up so much by their other beers only led me to disappointment. Not a bad beer, but nothing to compare to their imperials.
