sfontain (496), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Dark brown; very small but staying creamy, eggshell head; lots of lacing. Aroma of malts, pine, citrus, nuttiness, and light caramel. Flavor similar with malt, caramel, and piney hops. Medium-thick, moderately frothy body. Kind of plain but very drinkable.
hip_hop (65), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 15, 2008 Stinks of good ol’ grassy hops, hints at the malt, suggests caramel as well. Does indeed taste of raisins. An excellent beer that I look forward to having again in the winter. KingpinIPA (792), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 26, 2008 Copper color. Smell of malt, hops, spice, caramel and some citrus. Taste of caramel, hops, malt, dark fruit, spice and minor citrus. Lothore (226), California, USA Apr 26, 2008 A- Pours a deep red hue with a fizzy eggshell head that leaves some lacing as it goes down.
S- Smells of dark fruits, raisins, etc.
T- Taste is much too tame for an old ale. Hits the raisin flavor at the begining moves into spices and sort of fades away at the end.
M- A bit thin, lots of carbonation.
D- Not terrible but I couldnt ever see myself drinking this again. I like big old ales, this one just doesn’t fit the bill. pepsican (640), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Apr 18, 2008 Dark amber pour with a fluffy white head. Aroma was very malty with some sugar sweetness. Flavor is heavily malted with a good hops background which reminded me of a sessionable barley wine. Great pine hops going on in this one. I get some toffee and nuts going on to round it out. Man, I have passed this one up a few times at the store and I’m kicking myself for it now. Very nice. Goodgrief (993), Middletown, Delaware, USA Apr 12, 2008 Dec. 2007 - Pour was clear dark amber with almost no head even with a vigorous pour. Some slight aroma was detected of burnt caramel. The flavor was pleasantly surprising...caramel malts, brown sugar, some nutty notes reminiscent of a brown ale and some mild spicing with a zingy pine hop presence in the back end. Crisp and enjoyable for sipping on a winter’s night. Good stuff.
