Commercial Description:
With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Yummmmm. I love the hop profile in this. Perhaps the beer that has everything!? I get citrus hops abound and lots of pine, moderate soapy notes start the profile off with funky cilantro as soon as it hits the mouth, then into some grassy oilly bitters, then finished off crisp and cleanly by floral hops. Again, yum. Would love to try this on draft. The malts are perfect too, they’re in medium quantity but not bready and only give a light caramel backbone. Exceptional brew.

Deep copper colored body with a light yellowish khaki head. The nose was very sweet caramel with some hints of apple core. Doughy notes mix with some walnuts. The taste is largely burnt bread crust with some pear sweetness. The finish is leathery with iced tea. A big brew that begs to be sipped. It is decent, but a little much in the dough character, I found it cloying.

Bottle pours clear dark brown/caramel color with off white head. It laces the glass as you drink it. Aroma is citrus hops and tobacco. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Flavor follows the nose. Citrus hops, almonds, tobacco, caramel, and some spice. Maybe ginger and cinnamon. This is an interesting brew. I like it.

Bottle at home. Clear dark brown - white head. Lovely medium citric hoppy aroma. Nice malty, nutty, light tobacco, fruity, light dryness, ryebread, spicy, caramel, soapy, grape fruity. Nice freshness -> high drinkability.

12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Pours a clear dark amber with a finger of off white head. Caramel malt and plenty of piney hops in the aroma. Solid malt base with a little sweetness that is offset with a good amount of hop bitterness. Fairly dry finish. Medium bodied. A little bigger than a lot of the winter ales that you see. This style seems pretty common lately for winter ales, but this one stands out.

12oz bottle. Pours reddish brown with a creamy tan head and some lacing. Smells of spicy, fruity hops with some carmel and toffee notes in the background. Flavor had a caramel base, sharp pale malt and mildly fruity hop finish.

For an old ale this is very light. Not much going on with this beer. Not much aroma. One of the plainer holiday ales around. Even the color doesn’t evoke home and hearth and snow outside. I usually like Southern Tier. This doesn’t do much for me.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a decent head. Left some lacing on the side of the glass. Aroma was caramel, toffee, and malts. Flavor was excellent. Basement aroma, butterstoch, and nutty. Finish was mild bitters. Medium body. Great winter beer.

Bottle courtesy of JRedmond. I’ve been trying to get my hands on this brew for over a year. Basically the last mainstream ST brew that I haven’t rated. Really happy to have finally tried it.. so massive props. The brew poured a leathery brown with off white dissipating head atop. Flavors are strong and hearty for an Non-Imperial Southern Tier... hop is initially present but loads of cereal malts and sugary hay undertone flavors are present. A very strong offering 3.55
