Commercial Description:
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

Draft at Peach’s in Yellow Springs, OH. Not in the class of Edmund Fitzgerald or Anchor Porter, this beer has a nice flavor with some roasted malts and coffee, and it is a rather nice, drinkable session beer. I thought the body was rather thin even for a porter and it lacked depth and complexity compared to the top ranked porters.

Pours a deep dark brown with a nice almond head and lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Taste is mostly roasted malts. There is some coffee undertones but not overbearing. A nice balanced beer that is very enjoyable.

Bottle. Black with mocha head, slight reddish-brown hue. Strong roasted malt, some spice and nuttiness in the aroma, oh my. Thin mouthfeel, slight hoppy crispiness. Dark chocolate and roasted nutty malt dominate. Chewy finish. Not perfect, but very solid.

Bottle. Dark brown with some reddish notes. Medium bubbly off white head showing great retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, toffee, coffee, cereals and a bit of wood. Flavor is chcolate, roasted malt, wood, smoke, hops and coffee with a moderately bitter finish. Thin body, very drinkable.

Bottle. Wonderful appearance of deep brown with a crimson rim. Black forest cake aroma with coffee and molasses in the background. Lighter palate than expected. Heavy coffee flavour, distant chocolate malt and a mild herbaceousness. A very good porter.

Deep brown pour with a sticky brown head. The nose is really lovely. Lots of sweet milk chocolate and a bit of rich herbal character. Aromatic milk chocolate sweetness with very little roast. The flavour is pretty nice... soft cocoa sweetness and a slight backnote of licorice as well. The malts show a lot complexity throughout. Chocolate and toast along with a light smokiness. A kiss of cola-like spiciness and a touch of saltiness on the back. It’s a pretty solid, medium-bodied porter.

Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is rich and sweet, with espresso, chocolate, caramel, maple notes. Taste is slightly bitter to begin, then moves to a sweeter dark chocolate taste and finishes with an espresso taste. Great progression. Overall a really nice porter.
