Commercial Description:
Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor, which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

Bottle from De Molen bottle shop. Black beer with lasting tan head. Good choc aroma, some hop and some yeast, which is good. Very choccy and malty in the mouth. Pretty good intensity after drinking some British normal bitters as I have this evening. Tiny bit of plastic on aroma and in flavour. It has some bizarre satsuma fruit too. God knows where that comes from. Choc does come through. Doesn’t go too well with the pork loin steak sandwich I was eating. Fine, but nothing special.

Bottle: Very deep amber coloured and - presumably - hazy with a big rocky tanned head; slightly sweetish roast-malty nose with a tinge of molasses, dried fruits and leather; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied, a bit fizzy; robust - drier and more bitter - finish: molasses, roasted malt and a tinge of smoke. Tastes a bit like a diluted Imperial Stout......

Dark brown with a ruby glow body with a frothy light-brown head. The lacing and head retention are okay. The roasted malts produce a strong espresso-like aroma, with hints of dark chocolate, caramel, and a bit of dark fruit. Some hops are also present in the smell, giving the beer a nice floral undertone. The taste is a bit smoky, with a fair amount of sweetness, and a wonderful coffee-chocolate taste profile. Some subtle hop character. The after-taste is moderately bitter, with lingering coffee notes, and just a hint of dark fruit. The beer is very smooth on the palate. It has a very roasty, full flavoured mouthfeel and drinks quite easily. Overall, it is a good full-bodied, yet sessionable porter.

THOUGHTS: Nice beer, but only a decent porter. The flavor and aroma were nice but a little thin. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a very dark red that looked black in the glass with an average, off-white head that left good lacing. The aroma was moderate roasted malt, chocolate and coffee along with some cherry. The initial flavor was sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was acidic and bitter. There was roasted malt, sour coffee, some chocolate and a little hops. The light to medium body was a bit oily and then dry with lightly fizzy carbonation and a dry, lightly astringent and lightly metallic finish.

Very smooth medium bodied porter. It has a nice lingering bitterness and an aftertaste of hop resins. Not exceptional, but quite good.

120z bottle, dark brown color, with some reddish highlights, and a thick tan-colored head, light toasted, roasted, faint smoked malt nose, with some hints of smoked ham and bacon, with some mild coffee, mochaish, cappucino, chocolate cookie dough accents, and some faint burnt dark raisin, date, plum aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, roasted, toasted, black malt character with some earthy flowery hop grassy, faint minty cloverleaf accents, with some dark coffee, black bitter chocolate flavours, with a mild burnt toast, dark dried fruity notes, with a light licorice spiciness, leading towards a roasty, hop leafy, piney bitterness finish.

355ml bottle bought at LCBO Rideau and King Edward (Ottawa), November 1st 2009. Brown cola, little head. Aroma of roasted barley malt, a little caffeineted. Sweet taste of chocolate malt with notes of coffee, aftertaste of caffeine, slightly bitter. Not very tasty but pleasant!

Smells like an outstanding mix of chocolate, malts, and coffee. Tastes very rich and smooth, with the chocolate and coffee tastes winning out. Not too thick really. Still, pretty good.
