RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Nov 1, 2007 12oz bottle. Aroma: Light roasted malt with some chocolate. Raspberry is pleasant with sweet and lightly sour notes, but smells more like an extract than real fruit. Appearance: Medium brown in color with rusty orange highlights. Light khaki head was full and foamy with fair retention. Fair lacing. Flavor: Roasted malt with chocolate and light nutiness. Raspberry is more prominent in the nose than in the flavor. Some fruity sweetness and a light sourness mid taste. Palate: Medium-light bodied and watery. Moderate carbonation. Overall: Not so good. One dimensional, finishes flat, and watery. Disappointing.
jcwattsrugger (3942), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Aug 21, 2008 12 oz bottle-pours a dissipating to a ring tan head and light mahogany color. Aroma is raspberry syrup. Taste is raspberry, then medium/dark malt, some nutty/caramel, slight hops. Lighter than most porters, maybe a “summer porter”. Plenty of carbonation. (Rating #1884) NomDeBeer (148), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 15, 2008 I really enjoyed this beer, but then I like anything with raspberries. Flavor: roasted malts, chocolate, and a touch of bitter ash that go nicely with tart raspberries. As others have pointed out, it does have a light body. And I agree with DrBayern that this is a dessert beer rather than an everyday sipper. DrBayern (951), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Aug 11, 2008 Date: 08/09/08, 12 oz. bottle
Aroma - Fruity, with the raspberry unmistakable. roasted malt and hints of chocolate lie underneath
Appearance - Clear mahogany, large, estremely durable light tan head, with a thin foamy layer still present after 10-15 minutes at the bottom of the glass. A sticky, thick lace adds to picture.
Flavor - Molasses, sweet cherry, and chocolate malt flavors up front, with a nice citrus rind bitterness that comes through at the finish, which develops a soft dryness.
Palate - Medium/full body and carbonaiton, smooth, and gently dry
Overall - I found this to be much better thatn the ratings would suggest. More of a dessert or after dinner beer. Not somethig I would want to drink often, but food in the right contest. jimhilt (1408), Bow, New Hampshire, USA Jul 26, 2008 Pours a five+ finger cream head that fades slowly, leaving a good lace. Deep mahogany color. Light carbonation and medium bodied. roasted coffee nose. Flavor is roasted coffee, with late hint of raspberry. $1.85 for a 12oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
