Commercial Description:
Don't let Tripel's light color and delicate aroma fool you, this is one serious beer brewed with maximum effort. First, we introduce freshest barley to crystal filtered water. Second, we add the best hops shipped directly for Europe. Third, our special yeast is the catalyst for fermentation, gobbling sugar and creating alcohol as it works. Some say that the Belgian monks who first brewed this style called it triple to denoted its high alcohol content. Still others believe triple's origins lay in its triple fermentation; twice in the brewery and once in the bottle. Whatever the answer, ours is the Tripel threat.

Draft at the Southern Tier Brewpub (The Empty Pint). Pours a slightly hazy dark gold with a white head. Aroma is light, a bit sweet with a faint floral hop note, not very spicy or fruity. Taste is biscuity malt up front, hint of caramel, with a big, grassy, floral, earthy hop presence that lingers on the palate. Yeast is extremely subdued for the style, seemingly replaced by the big hop presence. Also missing is any candy sweetness or ripe fruit note. Very odd to call this a tripel.

Bomber. Pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. Nose is a little weak, with fruit, sugar, and a little yeast. Taste is also fruity, a little yeasty, sweet, and lightly malted. The taste is similar with a little spice and a little booze. Not much carbonation for a tripel, leaving a little bit of a "flat" impression. Overall, not a bad brew, but not up to some of the other gems from ST.

bottle. Pleasantly suprise by this one. Thicker and bolder than most tripels. Darker than expected. Underrated.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a darker golden with a sticky pure white head with a few rising bubbles. The aroma displays pilsner, honey, and what I think smell sort of like American hops. The flavor comes off as lightly spiced which is probably a combination of yeast and hops. Its pretty damn sweet as well. A bit heavy on the body and sticky. Light on CO2 for a Belgian anything. This beer is just okay.

Bottle. Pours a golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma of light caramel, earthy and floral hops, citrus and some light fruit. Malty sweet flavor with fruit, floral, light spices, yeast and has a slight hop bitterness

Southern Tier Tripel is a cloudy golden ale with some small particles swirling in it. It has a frothy white head that turns splotchy as it recedes. It has a faint aroma that seems dusty and fruity. It is medium bodied and smooth. The finish is crisp. It has a bold flavor: slightly sweet, fairly bitter and quite peppery. It is well balanced and well blended. The end of the taste is a warm wash of alcohol. There is an herbal aftertaste. Another solid offering from Southern Tier.

22oz. bottle. Mild, fruity and sweet aroma, some gentle floral touches and sugary, honeyish malt. Clear deep golden in color with a slight, subsiding head. Flavor has a bit more to offer, as luck would have it, showing a strongly sweet malt presence, tropical and citrus fruits, and a touch of bitterness towards the finish, which also contains a bit of hop spice and some herbal tones. Virtually no sign of the alcohol at any point, even after significant warming. Mouthfeel is low in effervescence and fairly smooth, body is full. A nice effort, certainly not disagreeable but not going to rank among the greats of this style.

Golden in colour, thin initially large white coloured head, some lacing. The aroma was lightly sweet, herbal, floral, some spice and citrus. The flavour is of oranges, peaches, some herbs and spices, minor alcohol. Sweet alcoholic mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes spicy, some alcohol warmth, lingering.

This is lacking the body and aggressiveness of the top triples, while this is somewhat enjoyable it is highly forgettable.

650ml bottle from the Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York.
