Commercial Description:
Brewed in the style of the old London Imperial Russian stout to a recipe perfected over 40 years ago, the roast coffee and almost port-like characters make it an excellent nightcap and winter warmer. Voted Champion Stout at the 2001 Australian International Beer awards having previously been Grand Champion Beer in 1988 and 1991.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of highlandlad. Pours a dark brown - almost black - with a vague, reddish hue and a creamy, light brown head. Vinous aroma of sweet, hard roasted malt. Medium body, rather sweet hard roasted malts with accents of dried fruit and a little port. Subdued bitterness with a discreet, ashy edge. Somehow I have a feeling that this is bottom fermented, but I may be wrong. Anyways, it’s an excellent Stout. 301107

Bottle. Pours a pitch black colour. Sweet, smoky, chocolate, bitter coffee aroma with roasted malt. Fair mouth feel. The flavour has roasted amlt, some smoke, bitter chocolate and roasted caramel. Bitter chocolate roasty finish.

Bottle. One of those stouts that starts off with the sort of kick that you could sometimes do without, but once you’re acclimatized, the bottle’s almost done and you’ve been happily inhabiting the land of roasted coffee licorice malted nuttiness.

Pours a very dark black with a quickly disappearing head. Aroma was a rich a strong, creamy molasses. Flavour was malt heavy with a smoky aftertaste. Really enjoyed this beer.

Bottle -- Medium but dense tan head with not a lot of retention or lacing. An almost impenetrable black. Rich and delicious aroma of roasted malt, coffee and caramel. Very strong, but almost harsh, burnt flavour with quite a lot of bitterness. The flavour becomes more complex as it gets warmer. Nice full palate, although perhaps some unexpected wateriness. A very fine brew.

23 May 2006 - Light roasted malt aroma. Black colour, OK head and good lacing. Light simple malt flavour. Bitter roasted malt finish and awful stark medicinal aftertaste.

750 ml bottle. Pours black with a creamy disappearing head. Aroma was rich with molasses and caramel. Tastes the same but with less flavor as you’d expect and more bite. Nice and smooth on the palate and goes down the hatch with an addiction for more. A very nice stout.

Deep black with a creamy brown head that was short but lasting. Aroma consisted of chocolate liqueur, roasted almonds, some sweet molasses and some alcohol. Fairly full bodied, as you’d expect, but it contains the alcohol quite well. The 750ml bottle went down quite easily, but it would probably have been best to share it! A pity it isn’t more widely available.
