Commercial Description:
An English style special amber ale. This ale's full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

A slightly dark amber pour. Flavor is somewhat light, yet somewhat filling. The flavor is that of an apple/orange blend. The malts and hops are both distinguishable, but don’t seem to blend quite right. There is a lingering apple aftertaste.

This dark brown ale poured with a miniscule beige head. I guess "English Style" has come to mean "less flavor." There is a malty flavor that is not intense and a little hop bitterness at the finish. A nice-tasting beer, but not remarkable.

Apr. 2007 - This is an odd brew. I had to read all the other reviews to get an idea of what I’m tasting in hear that I couldn’t put my finger on. Dark copper pour, with a large bubble head that reminded me of a soda. Aroma was of biscuity malts. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, (and this is where I steal descriptors) overripe fruit, lots of fruity bubblegum, "ratty notes" (I like that one), and a blend of "interesting" hops. Some bitterness, but not overly so. Decently smooth and easy drinking mouthfeel.

red amber with light tan head. Sweet Malty aroma. Chocolatey coffee malt flavor with a favorable palate. Dark and heavy for an ale - nearly a super weak porter.

Pours a deep copper color with a small amount of white head. Mild, hoppy aroma. Nice flavor, with moderate hops, a little caramel, and a bit of metallic aftertaste. Not bad.

I’m not sure why this beer rates mediocre. It has just the right balance of mild hops and chocolate malt caramel and an easy thin mouth feel to make this a top notch affordable highly drinkable beer. Can you say UNDER rated?

Bottle. Amber color, small white head, clear. Touch of citrusy hops in aroma, and mildly malty flavor. Caramel, slight touch of chocolate. Decent beer.
