Commercial Description:
An English style special amber ale. This ale's full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor's Note: It is unknown at present exactly where each of the Spanish Peaks beers are being brewed. Flying Dog no longer makes any of them. Some are brewed by City Brewery in LaCrosse, WI. Expect this beer entry to move as more recent info becomes available.

Pours a medium brown with a healthy head. Aroma is malty, with caramel and powdered chocolate. Perhaps a little honey as well. Flavor is actually more complex than I expected. Initially sweet-malty, then some slight white butter, and then a mild hop bitterness. The hops definitely have Washington state written all over them. Palate is medium, average. Very decent. Better than I expected. Very high drinkability/slammability.Overall, good.

Light copper color, very small head that fades and tiny carbonation bubbles rising quickly. Its an average appearance. A big malt aroma, honey sweet with banana tones. There is something that gives it a spice smell. Flavor has a big malt kick that gets overstepped by a strong hop taste. Combining the fruit malt and damn good hops makes this Montana product a choice English ale. I would place Back Dog above Sierra Nevada.

12oz bottle from Willow Bend Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a generally clear hazy dark amber color with a one finger tannish white head that settles slowly. Aroma is sweet and somewhat floral with notes of bread, yeast, malt, ripe fruit, caramel, honey, and slights notes of toffee and floral hops in the background. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of floral hops, spice, caramel, raisins, honey, bread, yeast and some lighter notes of ripe fruit. Generally light body with a floral hop finish.

Beer pours reddish orange. Citrusy and spicy aroma. Slight citrus flavor but nothing too overwhelming. Fairly decent.

I don’t know why this is rated so low. It has a nice hop to it that is sort of like a low alc stout. Very nice, mildly bitter, and a bit refreshing from the lower abv. Nice. I liked it.

Clear, dark amber with a large, off-white head. Moderate pine and biscuity malt aroma. Rather sweet flavor up front, turing moderately bitter, notes of caramel and toffee rear their heads throughout. Finish is a bit cardboardy with quickly fading spruce and caramel flavors until ultimately ending a little sour.

Purchased a single 12-oz bottle from Flanagans in Appleton, Wisconsin. Pours a clear dark reddish brown brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates to a white ring and some excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, some citrus zest, a touch of pine and floral hops. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of caramel malt, some grassy floral hops and a touch of citrus. Finish is a little gritty with a dry caramel malt aftertaste.

Bottle 355ml , Appearance: clear dark brown with hint of ruby , large , presentable tanned crown. Light lacing. 4- Aroma: clean wet hoppy feel , twig , brown malt , cocoa , slightly mineral edges. Flavor/Palate: Medium light bodied . Brown malts with slight roast , bitter edgy feel , slightly metallic with dark roasted feel ending. Well spread but with out much depth.
